A lot of us get overly emotionally invested in elections. We really shouldn't. It's not healthy.
Post-election depression I think is a fairly common occurance. It makes sense that this should happen if a race is evenly tied, or if the candidate you favor is ahead and ends up losing, but in this election, that simply is not the case.
All I'm saying is in this election, it's obvious that Romney is going to lose. The election is only 6 days away. The likelihood that the polls will shift in Romney's favor by then is slim. Even if they did, with early voting, it wouldn't make much of an impact.
I have said for a while now that I believe that Obama will win, and win with exactly 303 electoral votes. As time has gone on, I've only been reinforced in this belief.
That's not to say that it will happen. Maybe Colorado will go one way or the other. Maybe Florida, Virginia, or Ohio will. But I really doubt it.
Regardless of the outcomes in these states, it doesn't change that fact that Romney has no electoral path to victory. He's going to lose.
Accept it now, and you'll be the better for it.
Now I'm not saying that you shouldn't vote for Romney. If you wanna bet on a losing horse, go right ahead. But your horse will come in last place. I'm just saying this so you know this ahead of time. There's no reason to get your hopes up, only to have your hopes destroyed in 6 days.
So since Romney is going to lose, I think this bring up a more important question.
When Obama wins, does this not mean that he has earned "political capital", as Dubya put it? If the American People reject a Republican businessman, then does that not mean that they prefer President Obama's policies? Does this not mean that the GOP will have absolutely no legitimacy in blocking every attempt Obama makes to try to heal the American economy?
We get so caught up in the horse race, but elections have consequences. In this election, it means that the American People think a community organizer is better suited to fix the economy than a Republican businessman. It means that they think that the rich should pay more in taxes instead of getting a 20% tax break. It means that they think universal health care is a good idea. It means that they think that we ought to do whatever we can to bring manufacturing jobs back home from overseas. It means that the American People think that Wall Street should have more regulation, not less. It means that the American People think we should focus more on spending money on infrastructure than cutting the deficit.
It means that the Republican business agenda has been completely rejected.
Elections have consequences. And if the GOP behaves the same way after the election as they did before, then it means that they don't respect the wishes of the American People.
It is my hope that (for once) the Republicans will find the decency in themselves to be humbled by the election results, instead of acting to engage in economic and political sabotage at a time when our nation is in dire need of solving it's problems.
