The immigration problem could be quite easily solved. Just make the US an unfriendly work environment for the illegals and make our social services unavailable for illegals as well.
If conditions for illegal immigrants are no better than from where they came, guess what? They'll eventually quit coming.
The way it is now, and the way it's been for decades, is a revolving door policy. They sneak in, they get caught, deported, and then they sneak in all over again. It's like the "drug war" you can never fight it on the supply side, you can only hope to lessen demand.
I can speak as an employer, if the fines were high enough it would discourage companies from hiring illegals. Slap a hundred thousand dollar fine per illegal hired and watch the demand for undocumented worker to dry up overnight.
Similarly, deny all social services to those without status. No free school, medicine, food stamps etc. That's the major problem that illegals bring. The unduly stress the social services that have been set up for the citizens of this country and yet they don't actually pay into the system. Simple solution, no "valid" and verifiable social security card, no social services. Problem solved in a few short months.
I know there are already the Minute Men but I'm talking about a service under the control of either county, state or federal authorities. It's worked well for decades for the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary has been serving since 1941 as an all volunteer service. They can't do law enforcement or carry weapons but act as a powerful and important adjunct.

As soon as one of these guys shoots a good guy by mistake, or anyone who is not armed, this program will come crashing down. And lawsuits against the county will multiply. What do you want to bet that the county liability insurer is already saying - no way do we cover this.
The idea is just completely impractical in modern times.
I'm certain a set of guidelines and rules of engagement could be devised that would adequately control the risks.
Coast Guard Auxiliary members face life safety risks all the time. There are strict rules that manage the risks. That's what training and rules are for.
