Minimum wage was never designed to provide a "living wage", minimum wage means your skill level is so low that you aren't even worth what you are being paid. Minimum wage is supposed to be for entry level work, if you are too stupid or too lazy to learn enough skills to compete in the workplace, that's not my fucking problem.
It costs money to expand the number of the impoverished. They turn to crime, which costs more money in extra police to keep your car, or worse, your home from being broken into. When they are caught, it costs money to put them in prison, and to hire prison guards to keep an eye on them. You lose vital talent and productivity from workers who are deprived of opportunity when they might have been someone who invents a product that improves all of our lives.
You certainly shouldn't have kids if you can't afford them, and hell, you probably shouldn't have kids anyway, but when it costs 64k to raise a family of 4 on the basics, and the median US income is 54k, then something is seriously wrong. And it's an indication that our current system is unsustainable. And that is turning into everyone's problem, whether we like it or not.
