Just turn on a LED and flip your switch. With that you can build anything from a switching circuit to a computer.
Of course there’s Class D flip flops like the 4013B that can do the same thing, but you’d probably need a microcontroller to drive them. Something like an 8 bit CMOS like an ATmega8. Luckily, all these things are made by American companies.

People who don’t know anything about electronics are sometimes rather amusing. If someone doesn’t know the difference between discrete components and IC’s, then they’re probably not going to realize that the electronics industry is so vast that there’s speciality sub fields. People who work in audio don’t have to work with a megahertz range, much less the gigahertz range. I once tried to explain to someone my work in audio electronics and he thought I could fix his vacuum cleaner and hot dog roller. Making wafers is a highly specialized area of electronics. These are not chips. Transistors are essentially a double ended diode. Positive type and negative type semiconductors are joined to create a depletion zone. Metals are conductive. Some things like rubber and glass are not conductive. And some thing are kinda conductive. Not really conductive, but you can make them conductive if you force the issue. These are known as semiconductors and geranium and silicon or the main semiconductors. At an atomic level you can blend a precise amount of impurities (doping) into a semiconductor, like boron, and create an atomic lattice where there are extra spots (holes) for electrons. When you apply a small voltage at the barrier between PNP (positive-negative-positive) or NPN transistors you can get a larger flow of current out, as all the electrons rush in to fill the carious holes.
What’s happening with wafers is that these transistors (which in a T0-92 package is about the size of your pinky nail), are instead built, atom by atom using processes like chemical vapor deposition. This technology is still reasonably new and while we can build wafers for some time now, we’re now getting into nano scale tech, where the advantages of quantum tunneling will become present.
The advantage of this is smaller more compact electronics, and it’s pretty limited to just computing, which is nothing that anyone in audio would ever work with. So, no, I don’t build telephones in my basement, but I am working on things like a thermionic weather radar system utilizing relaxation oscillators. 🙂
