This past weekend, the weather sucked for flying, so my fellow retiree airport bums sat around the FBO drinking coffee, and solving the world's problems. One particular subject that I found very interesting is the discussion about the Obama Certificate of live Birth, released by the Whitehouse. I know this has been brought up ad nauseum, but some points deserve further consideration. I'm not a birther, never really looked into it, besides, Obama's been in office 3 years, and not much to do now about his qualifications IAW the Constitution. Here goes....
1) Obama is listed as 'African American' on the certificate released by the WH. In 1961, specifically, 4 August, 1961, his birth date, the term 'Negroes was used for colored folks at the time. The AA word usage did not come along until years later.
2) Barack Hussein Obama is listed as his father, and his age was noted as 25. No big deal, right? The father's birth place is noted as, Kenya, East Africa. Big problem there. Kenya, as such, did not exist in 1961. It was called the "British East Africa Protectorate", until 1963, when the British pulled out. Thus becoming Kenya, in 1963.
3) His place of birth is listed as "Kapi'Olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital". Another time line problem. That name did not exist in 1961. Not until the 1978 merger of KauiKeolani Children's Hospital with Kapi'Olani Maternity Home did it become Kapi'Olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital. How can that name be on a legitimate 1961 Certificate of Live Birth?
4) I think we've been had. Comments?

2. The East Africa Protectorate ended in 1920 when the area became known as the Kenya Colony, named after the highest mountain in the region.
3. The name of the hospital was changed in 1931 from Kapiʻolani Maternity Home to Kapiʻolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital. It was known by that name until 1971 when it was changed to Kapiʻolani Hospital.

Here's an image of Obama's live birth cert (pictured below). Note that no where on the birth cert is the race of the child described. Not as colored, black, or African American. The mother's race is listed as Caucasian, the father as African, which makes sense, since he was from Africa.
Regardless, at the time there was some effort to bring the term "African American" into the mainstream. "Black" later became the preference.
Secondly, Kenya had been in turmoil ever since the Mau Mau uprising back in 1952. The Kenyan African National Union formed in 1957, and the country was in the middle of a civil war with the British. Obama's father's birth place is listed as Kenya, East Africa. Here, Kenya is listed as a place, not a nation.
Thirdly, yes, Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital did exist in 1961. It became that hospital in 1958. Furthermore, other birth certs at that time and from that hospital also list the same hospital. A 2 second google search could have disproved it, Jersey.

I dug a little deeper.
1) The KANU was a political party, not the country name, as was the Kenya Crown Colony mentioned by tusayan above. The KCC was a political party formed by the white settlers to advance their cause for land ownership. It did not become Kenya until Jomo Kenyatta was in power and the British relinquished their control.
2) There are some minor discrepancies on numerous certificates for children born in the same hospital as Obama on the days surrounding his birth.
e.g The hospital street address on Obama's certificate is 3 miles distant, and on a completely different street from the location given on other certificates at that time. Also, the certificate ID # on Obama's certificate is a higher number than those born the days after him. His should be a lower number in numerical ID # order since he was born before them. Perhaps a less than organized admin department caused these errors, who knows.
Btw, spent some time in both Mombasa, and Nairobi. Kenyans, as a general rule, have disdain for Americans. But they sure as fuck like our dollars. Had a steak dinner in a Mombasa restaurant one evening. Don't know what it really was, but I was sick as a dog for 4 days after, layed up in a hotel. You ever get to Nairobi, check out the Florida Club. Some good looking hookers in there, lol. Not all of them are black either.
To me it seems strange that they would list "East Africa" on the cert, like it was a country or something, and Kenya was a town. It seems to me that whoever typed up the birth cert didn't have a solid understanding of geography, which I suppose really isn't all that uncommon for Americans.
I haven't looked into this, but the different street could be because it's a different part of the hospital, or a different entrance. The hospital may even be in more than one building. The cert number may be based on when the mother was admitted to the hospital. For instance, a mother who arrived a few days before birth may have had the paperwork filled out sooner than someone else who arrived who was already in labor.
I'm not the most well traveled bloke, Jersey, but I certainly wouldn't include Kenya high on my list. The HIV rate alone is enough to keep my willy off the entire continent!
