WA Representative McDermott

Today Jim McDermott led the Pledge of Allegiance on The Hill.

He left out the "under God" part.

When questioned, the 67 year old Congressman said as a child he was brought up to say it without that phrase.

The "under God" phrase was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 during the McCarthyism HUAC witch hunts.

I live in McDermott's district. He can't lose. Very liberal Seattle district. He normally wins by 60-70%.

He is a gadfly though. But his district continues to return him.

Since the words "under God" were added by congress...

it would be nice if someone in congress would introduce legislation to have them removed.
