Saw an interesting bit noting that DeSantis is already building the center-right coalition he’ll need to win the General Election. The “slit their throats” comment is just a pitch to the right wing portion of that base.
I made a good living trying to figure out what people would do before they did it. Ron DeSantis has me utterly stumped, and it’s a wonderful thing indeed.
This morning, a bunch of pieces fell into place as to what his true game plan might be. I have to continually remind myself we’re dealing with some crazy next-level genius here.
Let’s start with what’s happening in Iowa and NH as we speak. He’s running a virtually unopposed retail ground campaign. Officials in both places say they’ve never seen anything like it.
Retail politics is meeting people, and local media coverage of you doing it. You don’t just meet deep red Rs, you meet independents and even curious Dems.
Let me put this differently? He’s running his general election plan right now, in the hot summer of 2023, before anyone has figured out what he's really doing, and working hard to build his familiar center-right coalition in front of our very eyes.
He will likely build his center-right coalition in every primary state he targets. Those will be done deals, so he can now focus on running up the scoreboard.
Remember, he loves to do that.
The swing states are mostly a given. The center right coalition is powerful, and it works well almost everywhere. Frankly, it’s the most successful strategy in modern politics right now.
That leaves DeSantis free to seriously start attacking deep blue states like NY and CA. Dems will have to vigorously defend their turf. Or he starts going after a bunch of easy ones like NM and NJ.
He’s figured out how election decisions are typically made, and has decided to invent an entirely new approach. One that we haven’t seen before.
I hope you all are enjoying the show?
I certainly am.
