Trump posts AI photo of himself as Pope, says it "would be my number one choice."

The New York State Catholic Conference, which represents the state’s bishops, strongly condemned the post.
“There is nothing clever or funny about this image,” said in a post on X.
“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter,” the group said.
“Do not mock us.”

I agree with the sentiments of that statement, but as a PR strategy, I don’t know what was gained by the bishops in issuing the statement. i.e. was it an effective public relations strategy?

If you don't something immediately, critics will be all over you, claiming you don't care or are asleep at the wheel. If you say something later, critics will say it is not genuine and was only prompted by the blowback. So, yes, it was PR move.

I guess you’re right. Issue something now or lose credibility with the flock. It’s better than the bishop in Illinois who demanded an apology. That’s never going to happen, and might even prompt President Trump and his staff to double down.

The Bible tells us, “Make no mistake: God is not mocked” (Galatians 6:7). The Pope is the Vicar of Christ. By publishing a picture of himself masquerading as the Pope, President Trump mocks God, the Catholic Church, and the Papacy....
… This is deeply offensive to Catholics especially during this sacred time that we are still mourning the death of Pope Francis and praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the election of our new Pope. He owes an apology.
I also don’t agree that it’s “deeply” offensive to Catholics.
