I guess he doesn’t realize Presidents have always been able to use trade tariffs for political purposes. The only reason it ever stopped was because of neoliberal free trade policies that gutted this country of domestic manufacturing. Even Biden has stepped away from this nonsense, as it’s obvious post Covid that it’s idiotic to outsource everything to China.

In general free trade will find the most efficient system.  However there are national security as well as social issues that crop up.  The most advanced chip fabs are in Taiwan.  China could launch a couple missiles and cripple electronic chip production for years.  Manufacturing has disappeared from many areas of the US.  There are certain classes of jobs that don't require a ton of intelligence or training -- such as assembly line work.  Those people who have found alternate jobs are probably paid a lot less.  And others are simply unemployable.  There is a fear that the only thing to save use from this growing segment is UBI (universal basic income.)  However someone has to pay for that.  And UBI experiments have a terrible experimental track record.  Getting paid to do nothing is a powerful incentive to do nothing.  It enforces learned helplessness.
