The UK Guardian which was also quoted by Free Republic said, specifically about Reagan's comment, that "the experts say the trees alone are not the problem. The real villain is the motor car. Trees soak up carbon dioxide, and respire oxygen, doing far more good than harm", and, "he (Reagan) was partially right". Ronnie was just spouting off some factoid he got hold of, no genius at work here.
This is the same man who tried to get ketchup classified as a vegetable.
"Reagan is a senile moron that said, 'trees create pollution'. Well, he is correct.
Google, 'do trees give off carbon dioxide', and the answer, you'll find, is YES. During sunlight hours, trees take in CO2 and emit oxygen. However, during hours of darkness, and when dormant, the opposite is true. Check it out.

2. Massive budget deficts started under his Presidency.
3. '83 Beirut bombing massacre where almost 400 Marines died. RR turns tail & evacuates armed forces, which emboldens asshole terrorists like UBL to strike against U.S. interests.
4. Economic policies which caused great gap between rich & the rest of the country.
To be fair, I've thought every POTUS since LBJ has been a failure in one aspect or another. Last good POTUS, IMO, was Dwight Eisenhower, who I consider most underrated 20th century POTUS.
...I'm starting to come around on Ike, who obviously couldn't be nominated today as a Republican. But, then again, Nixon and Reagn probably couldn't either. As for Ike, if you re-read his departure speach warning about "the military-industrial complex" it rings chillingly true. The only "fact" I'll quibble with is that Reagan's withdrawl of US forces from Beirut influenced Bin Laden. I don't know about that, but I do know what turned him against the US was when US troops were allowed on Saudi soil to fight the first Iraq war. I guess it doesn't matter because he would have found an excuse no matter what. Fanatics always do.
For what it's worth, I'm not a big fan of Eisenhower. He did some good things for the country as president, e.g., Operation Wetback, but, believe it or not, he had low regard for the military.
As an E-1, I made $61/month. Congress wanted to raise military pay as part of the DOD budget, and I would be getting a whole $65/month. Eisenhower would not go for it, saying that $61/month was all we were worth, and deserved.
I agree with you about LBJ. He started out OK by getting a lot of Kennedy's programs passed but then he stumbled into Viet Nam. I don't want to re-fight that debate but it was his mis-handling of the war that caused him to bail on a second term.
when light is present plants take in CO2 and release O2 during Photosynthesis. At night, they take in O2 and release CO2. Underwater plants actually require about 13 ppm of CO2, while it's only about 3-4 ppm in the air.
Regardless, it doesn't mean that Reagan wasn't a moron. By the way, trees actually absorb pollution (CO2 isn't pollution). Without them producing the O2 that they do, we would all sufficate and die.
Speaking of which, an acre of marijuana produces 4 times more O2 than an acre of trees. After all, they grow like weeds.
