Is perennial contemplation of death part of the punishment?  Or merely an unintended consequence?

Did we do this guy a favor by keeping him in prison on the taxpayer dollar for 20 odd years?  Should we have snuffed him earlier?  Or is this part of the program?

Would he have lived as long if he had stayed free?

I distrust making homicide so sterile.   I think we need to stay in touch with our feelings, and make sure that everybody understands that this is a substantial discount on the retail price of an eye for an eye, and tooth for a tooth, but that there is still & always a price to be paid.
