Push back? No no no. Not every interview needs to have the interviewer inject his opinions. Putin, for better or worse, is essentially a dictator in control of a huge army who has international nukes and is currently involved in a land war in eastern Europe. The opinions of the interviewer are inconsequential. Instead a useful interview seeks to find out the motivations, concerns and goals of the subject. This information can then be used to shape future negotiations. Not listening to your opponent is a bad way to negotiate and only assures endless war.
