He was trying to help the guy who shot him. Probably in the worst way possible.

   Before every one decides their thoughts on gun control look at the American Civil Rights Unions web site and the issues the UK is having with "feral teens".
   The ACRU is about as left leaning as an organization can get and actually supports gun rights because the numbers are there to argue it makes america safer. 60% of firearms are owned in rural areas yet 86% of gun crimes happen in urban areas.

Then said they want their readers to sign an AW ban petition.

We don't have all the facts yet, or even know what kind of weapon was involved.  But no matter what kind of laws are passed, people will still have the right to take firearms to shooting ranges.  Even if an assault weapon was involved in this case, the killings could easily have happened with another type of weapon.  This is more about mental health issues of returning veterans.
PS: I am in favor of banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines but I'm under no illusions that it will work without other efforts in mental health, etc.

Shouldn't this be just another argument that we need better administration of mental health services?

You make it sound as if you think he is making up this number.  The man was awarded 2 Silver Stars and 5 Bronze Stars.  In interviews he stated that when he took the life of an enemy, he wasn't thinking about his score. He was thinking about the lives of his countrymen that he was saving. Have some respect please.

this bunch. they haven't a clue what it takes to get one confirmed and put in the service members SRB. in total over 4 plus tours he probably had close to four hundred kills.
