They don't need to. It's so bloody obvious that they are fakes. Duh!!!

They thought they did.  Had an "expert" do it.  But other "experts" disagree.

I doubt we will ever know- or until Karl Rove's Memoirs....

I don't need the "Evidence" to know that GW is a shirker.  The real record is damning enough!

60 MInutes did authenticate the documents and has multiple sources that veriifed the existence and authenticity of the documents.   A bunch of Republicans raised the smokescreen that the documents are fakes but they haven't done anything to date to disprove  60 MIntues' reporting.

They easily could have been produced on an IBM typewriter

If you think the facts stated in the article are false, show us some solid contrary evidence.

I guess the check hadn't arrived yet or he wants to maintain a modicum of integrity!

Prove a negative?

agrkej, I know you want it to be true, but its just so sadly a forgery.  One of the memo's mentions a senior officer who wouldn't be transfered in until 6 months after the date of the memo!

Be embarrassed, be sad, but don't continue to defend this bullshit.

I posted an article that pointed out that IBM typewriters at that time COULD do proportional font and superscript and used a font very similar to the one used in the memos.  Bite Me questioned it solely because it was written by a liberal, but gave no factual information to prove otherwise.

Now you give a fact that I have not heard before but you give absolutely no reference for where it came from.  Based on past experience, though, you probably heard it on Rush or FOX which do not have a good track record on providing accurate information.

1.  Littlegreenfootballs.com printed the letter out with MS Word in Times Roman (the default type) printed it at 50% grayscale, overlayed it and it is a perfect match for the letters offered by CBS.

2.  IBM typewriters did not have the ability to do proportional spacing.

3.  IBM typewriters could not justify perfectly.  These memo's were.

4.  IBM typewriters were pretty high-end in 1973 and were not in use by the Texas Air National Guard.  They used manual typewriters.

5.  The "experts" that CBS says they used are distancing themselves from the issue, claiming they only reviewed the signature on one memo - which they claimed was at least a fourth generation copy and they couldn't legitimate if it was actually signed on this document or pasted up later.

6.  The supposed author couldn't type and didn't own a typewriter.  His wife and son have said he didn't and wouldn't have written a memo to himself.

7.  The salutations were unmilitary in style, no other verifiably documents of the author were addressed or signed in this manner.

8.  Nobody but the arrogant Dan Rather is standing by this story, and oh, agrkej.

9.  Dan Rather is now irrelevant, I'll let others decide where you stand.
