Why was the Hamas attack so successful?

This is puzzling me. Why wasn't there more armed forces, especially on the Gaza border, to repel the attack? I am not victim blaming here, just asking. Wouldn't Israel have more incentive than virtually every country in the world to protect its border? Wouldn't there be a mass force to protect the dance festival, or whatever they called it? I heard sone locations took Israeli forces 10 hours to reach. I just figured with Hamas right on their doorstep, there would be army units stationed all along that border protecting 24/7, 365. What am I missing?

This was a massive failure of intelligence and readiness. Netanyahu should pay the price when it's all over and the accounting begins. But first the Israelis need to get the hostages out and root out Hamas. For good.
The only more massive failure of intelligence is by the righties here.

He has to take responsibility for the lack of readiness. What I am wondering though is, did he reduce the number and quality of the forces along the Gaza border that was there previously? The intel failure was a head scratcher but what about the troop strength/deployment that one would assume would be massive along a border where Hamas is literally just yards away? That's the part I really don't understand.

How could this have happened, on the anniversary of the Yom Kippur war no less. Hamas was planning this for over a year. How did Israeli intelligence not find out about it that whole time, but they were able to find hostages?

9/11 should have hurt Dubya politically. But it didn’t, it empowered him greatly. What if Netanyahu made the same calculation?

I think it's a case of massive incompetence but none of us know the truth in the matter.

Basically, Hamas lured the Israelis into believing Hamas did not want to attack, despite info the Israelis had about Hamas preparations. The Israelis wanted to believe it because they were more worried about the West Bank. They also had been granting more work permits for Gazans to work in Israel and they thought this had pacified Hamas.  In addition, Hamas had studied the Israelis' defenses and found several weaknesses. Taken together, these things conspired to allow a massacre.
