The federal minimum wage is $7.25/hr. That comes out to $15,080/year. Trump’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, BILLIONAIRE Soros hedge fund partner Scott Bessent, was asked at his hearing if Trump would raise the federal minimum wage. His answer: “No” Righties are fucking morons.
…and yet a burger flipper in France makes around $16 an hour and that was like 10 years ago. Who knows what it is now.
Meanwhile business after business is shutting down in Cali and Washington because they can’t afford the high minimum wage.
The last time I was in Boston I drove straight there from DC. I figured I’d stop someplace once I was there to get a bite to eat. By the time I got there McDonald’s and Burger King were the only options. The line for the McDonald’s weaved around the entire parking lot twice and spilled out onto the road. The line at Burger King was half as long, and I still waited 50 minutes in line in the drive thru. This was on a Wednesday night at midnight.
Thinking this was some freak occurrence I drove past there the following night. The same thing. Turns out Boston’s minimum wage is so high they just cut staff. Not caring that there were hour long waits at the drive thru.
Nothing has hurt the union movement more than the minimum wage. If there was no minimum wage than unions in all sectors would be more powerful and wages would be determined by collective bargaining instead of politicians.
I think min wages should be set on the county or city level. Surely there is some kind of equation that can factor in what the wage should be based on the prevailing local economy and wage needs for that county or city. For example, NYC might be $25/hr whereas upstate NY might be $18.
So yes, Trump is in the pocket of billionaires, and vice versa now that he will be Prez, but the blue collar workers who used to vote in droves for the Democratic Party no longer do. That is a GIGANTIC problem, as our party has ALWAYS been known for looking out for the middle class and below. . We better do an about face and learn from this past election and make the changes we so need. Standing up to the lunatics on our far left fringe would be a good start. We cant have the crazies running the asylum. We used to be the grown up in the room, and now, all too often, we listen and bow down to the kids.
