What I'm confused about is wasn't it supposed to be the liberals that tax and spend?  From what I can tell, the most liberal president in the last 28 years was the most fiscally responsible.  Moreover, the most conservative of the last 28 years was the least.  What happened?

I mean it. They wanted to saddle the government with enormous debt to cripple it and keep liberals from paying for any programs. Then they'd attack the government as being ineffective.

They called it "starving the beast" and thought it was a way to bypass the hard work of the democratic process. You know, actually engage in public debate and convince the people that spending was too high and proceed to cut it.

It's a bit ironic that the right wingers, who always pride themselves on being 'strong' and 'manly', etc. were afraid of public discourse and chose the coward's way of trying to cut spending. Unfortunately, all that has done is saddle our kids and grandkids with an astronomical debt and tie up 8-10% of the federal budget for them in interest payments.

How real conservatives can stomach the republican party is completely beyond me. I can understand morons and racists supporting republicans but I cannot understand how people concerned with individual liberty and fiscal responsibility can even think about voting for those assholes.
