It's a good point that property taxes are probably unfair.  They are an attempt to collect for services, such as paved streets, water and sewer systems, parks, fire and police protection, schools, etc.  Rich people don't actually benefit more so it is unfair they should pay more.  

on assessed values, so the government already has the means to increase the tax by increasing the assessment.  In California, we still have prop 13, which limits raising assessments to 1.5% per year, so the spread between market value and assessed value is often enormous, and why the Dems have tried multiple times to scrap prop 13.  If they are ever successful, many older retired people will lose their homes because they wouldn't be able keep up with the tax increases.  This is already happening in some other blue states.  People must sell and move because they can no longer pay property taxes.  This is just another example of Democrat confiscatory policies to prevent Americans from owning property while promising the American Dream through giveaways out of the other side of their mouths.

and we have a nice Democratic program called STAR, which gives those who have no kids in the school system a BIG refund on their local school tax. I'll be getting back more than $3000 in a few weeks. My actual local taxes are quite affordable.
