A little perspective on these "draconian" budget cuts and the Republican "victory"

...we're cutting money from the poor and from seniors. The poor and seniors don't have any money to begin with. So you're not going to balance the budget that way.

We could balance the budget by taxing people who do have money. But silly me, I forgot that we no longer live in a democratic republic.

The good news is that my stock in the ACME Gulliotine Company just went up again. Goody for me.

I was reading over the board, watching some talking heads debate on a news show and reading the latest news online about the Wisonsin protests, Wall street, Corporate taxes and all the other things we debate on this board....

As I pondered it, I really thought to myself, while I enjoy the political sparring, does it really matter??

Let's be honest. Let's say the left got everything they wanted!! They still lose....

Raise Corporate taxes, the capitalist raise the price of goods and pass it on to the middle class...

Pass Obama Care. The middle class is limited to government healthcare when the private companies can no longer afford to stay in business, the capitalists can afford to go anywhere and pay for the best healthcare.

Raise personal income taxes, the wealthy simply move their wealth offshore and invest in areas across the globe that are more favorable to them. Foreign jobs are created, American jobs are lost.

Pass collective bargaining, wages for Unions will stay artificially high, these payroll expenses are built into the products selling price, and the middle class wind up supporting the higher wages, not the company.

No matter what the left comes up with, no matter what they try, they will lose every time.

In the end, as I listen to the tones of debates and liberal posts, I do understand where all the hostility comes from. Because deep down, they know this. Before they have tried to state their first position, slung their first insult, they know, deep down, they have already lost.

And to top it off, while the debate rages on, those in the upper income brackets continue to live quite well. Another fact which greatly annoys liberals.

Bottom line to my liberal colleagues on the board. While I will continue our political sparring matches in the future, in the end, it does not matter. You have lost the debate before you ever touched the keyboard.

Sorry...

how the Democrats "rule".

Get and keep the populace dependant upon the Government for their existance and you can get them to do whatever you want, "controlling the masses".

IE, the Democrats philosophy...we will give you free healthcare, free housing, free money, whatever. We will take care of you, you won't want for a thing, as long as you vote for us,    or it will all be taken away from you.

The Republican philosophy... we will help you if you need it until you get back  on your feet and can help yourself.

Agreed.
It will take a violent move of the masses to change anything, no debating will change anything.  That is just the stage we are in. it will happen, but who knows when.this system cannot sustain the way it is.

I guess the rest of us might just as well STFU.  I mean, your conveniently skewed and over-simplified statements of "fact" are just sooooo compelling.  So kind of you to agree to keep talking to us un-enlightened folks!  Thanks!

starring Obama and Geithner. Both have been very supportive, and remember Geithner was President of the NY Fed working closely with Paulson. A lot of folks on both sides of the aisle didn't like TARP, but hey, name me another time the Federal Govt was in the "for profit" business? They've made good money. Not only on the banks, but even AIG. Now, will we ever see anything from Freddie and Fannie? Not in your lifetime. Not in anyone's lifetime. We may, if we are lucky, get our money back on GM and Chrysler, but I'm not holding my breath.

Just want to make sure you are balanced in your disdain for government.

Your statement of capitalist passing taxes to the middle class doesn't really work. Taxes are on profits, higher the profit higher the taxes. The problem today is with loop holes in the tax code which allows corporations to evade taxes. Corporations have gotten bigger and bigger, they can control many aspects which is exactly what happened with financial system, "too big to fail", that is the tip of the ice berg. What is your beloved republicans are doing? They opposed every single sensible thing in the financial reform law. The should have passed the bill to separate commercial banking from investment banking. Let them gamble with their own money, not with my measly savings.

Anthony6 is correct, when inequality reaches a point revolutions happen unless the plan is to keep the masses uneducated, stupid and partially starved and thats how tyrants control the masses.

I guess you must be referring to TARP.  You remember TARP?  Brought to you by Bush and Paulson.

So when do we decide enough is enough. We have been fighting LBJ's War on Poverty for 50 years. Don't see Harry running around crying "The war is lost, The war is lost. " Like Nahm, the gov't decided it would not be right if they actually let us fight it to win.  Just remember without poverty Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be out of a job. So we let them keep stirring to pot.

Are you saying that $38 billion a year is a drop in the ocean compared to our multi-trillion dollar budget simply because we are not taxing the rich enough? If we taxed the rich more, $38 billion would look bigger next to trillions of dollars?

Are you saying that cutting government spending is the same as taxing the poor more?

willy, there are no ifs ands or buts about it. We have to cut spending, and not these token cuts.

I was quite aware of this when I posted, and expected this response.  But the point is that TARP and the bailout are exactly the kind of things you'd expect from the Dems but that Reps conveniently forget about doing.
You also are right about the "for profit" part of this.  That's a good thing.  The government, which was the "lender of last resort," should make a profit.

Now THAT's funny!  You give the "masses" of Cuba way too much credit for overthrowing Battista.  In fact, the masses of Cuba voted with their feet and fled the country when Castro took over.  What are you, snow, a Commie sympathizer?
