He was waiting to see how effective McCain's mud campaign would be. Something I know about McCain, he's a rich source for real mud, unlike Bush whose background merely cast doubt on him. And all we saw what happened when Bush went negative on McCain.
Fitness to be Commander in Chief is not the front that Obama wants to focus on. If I were advising Obama I would tell him to focus on his "hope and change" message IOW don't get bogged down on specifics. His best chance is to keep the American public mesmorized and not asking too many questions. If he could keep that up, he would have a very good chance of becoming POTUS.
Fortunately, the other side has a voice on which issues they think are important to the voters. As the campaign progresses it will be come more and more obvious that Obama doesn't have a clue.
Obama just released two ads re McCain mentioning Ambramoff and Reed. (Like they are big issues today?)
He also as said "The price (McCain) paid for his party's nomination has been to reverse himself on position after position."
Of course, in spite of this statement saying McCain chose his positions for political advantage, Obama took great offense and got really angry when McCain suggested that Obama's took his position on the war because of political consideration.
Of course there must be some "nuanced" difference between the two statments that is too subtle for me.
Today, Obama has a big ad about McCain's houses. For someone who wants to avoid Rev. Wright and Ayers and all the other things so we can "focus on the issues," thereby avoiding "distractions," is it really an "issue" of importance how many condos McCain's wife has? I mean, we know she is rich. Are the details of her wealth an issue or a distraction?
Now, I am not upset at any of these things Obama's campaign is doing. It is called politics, and he is in the game. He can talk about McCain's wife's houses and Reed and Abramoff. They are as relevant as Wright and Ayers and Michelle "the first time I am proud of America."
There is one big difference with both sides doing this type of thing. Only one side is going to start crying, "Oh, they say such nasty things about us. Why can't they just talk about other things." Guess which side will whine and cry.
It's just politics as usual, of course for the left to admit that would mean that Obama is just another politician. The problem is, they have boxed themselves into a corner by claiming that while Obama has no experience or real proposals he is somehow above all of that because he brings "hope and change".
Dems, you can't have it both ways. Either he's a politician, and a poorly prepared one at that, or he's not. Obama is facing the dilema that all politicians face. He had to pander to the left to get the nomination, now he has to alter his positions to appeal to the center. AND he has to do this without showing himself to be either a liar, a flip flopper, or both. Good Luck with that. lol
Two nuts walk in to a bar and start talking about POW's left behind in "Indochina". Bartender says, "Wow, Indochina. You guys are mighty cool. But I thought Kerry and McCain went over there along with a bunch of other pols in the 80's and found no evidence of POW's? I thought there were about a dozen investigations by Congress and Ross Perot and bunch of others?
Two nuts say, Fuck you. We're pissed that McCain got way more bang for his VN service than we did. We don't think that's mighty cool.
Bartender says, Where were you when Kerry ran? He denounced all the soldiers as rapists, murderers, hung with Hanoi Jane, threw some other guys medals over the fence. Talk about leaving guys behind.
Two nuts say, Fuck you. Kerry's a Democrat. Everybody already knows he's a douchebag.
. . . why isn't accusing McCain of saying nasty things legit to you? ESPECIALLY when McCain promised a clean campaign, and reversed himself on THAT? It also becomes an issue when Obama apparently gave him the Benefit of the Doubt on this, and is only now starting to counter-attack.
You make a good choice of cynicism here, one that allows you the trump card of complaining about liberal whining above all else. So, that's the substantive issue to you? You don't like the off-key voice? That's what whining is, a totally anti-musical tone designed to aggravate somebody into giving you something.
In actuality, you've imagined this and you've inserted it into the discourse yourself, as other conservatives, Republicans and fellow travelers have. This meme gets recklessly passed around, stifling discourse and doing harm everywhere it goes.
If this is what the election swings on, the imagined tone of a Democratic-Liberal voice, then the choice is twisted. Try to break the hold of the ESTREMELY CORRUPT and WEALTHY suburban- Washington establishment and think of this as a substantial issue, and not a whine. If you hear me say this, nothing is off key.
I think you're wrong. You can't do what you're describing in the internet age. It will leave Republicans with that exact criticism and they'll tear into it. It also implies the fallacy you have that Obama is an empty suit. If he's managed accordingly, he will sink like a broken hunk of concrete.
In this age, Obama can only maintain a "cult of personality" in a very small demographic. You can't spread so little butter over so much bread.
I'd like to double your bet, but it goes against my principle of not spending money I don't have. I'm not a compulsive gambler. In fact, I seldom gamble.
People just thought Obama would be above it. He didn't muck very much with Hillary, despite complaints of people, she did herself in. When you're watching it, though, it's a little like wishing a nerd being bullied would be above it-- it just doesn't make sense.
When you say Dems can't have it both ways, when two stands are in contradiction, in a political movement or in a person, one will win out.
For the most part, politically active people now don't care how dirty the fight gets. I'd take that as an improvement over bowing out because its too dirty, and then feeling bad for the rest of your life over the outcome.
I notice that Republicans don't seem to be too dismayed over McCain breaking his promise, nor with any other complaints or gaffes. They certainly do notice gaffes by Obama, a lot of which aren't gaffes at all. Republicans, take that tire gage and jam it.
Meanwhile, I expect that now that he has had an overdue vacation, you are going to forget to notice it when he doesn't make any gaffes.
