Unions are doomed not because of greedy management or evil corporations, they are doomed because of the American consumer. Cheapest price possible, at any costs is all they want. So for all the liberals who want to pass the blame to a few, wake and see the real problem, YOU!!!
I once asked my friend Willy, who is a die hard Union supporter, what type of cell phone he had so we could see where is was manufactured.
Less than 7% of the work force is union and if every state were a right to work to work state union membership would be less than half of what it is now. Many workers are union because they are force to be union not because they want to be union. The same should hold true for all public workers. That too should be right to work.
The lack of membership in the unions would cause them to go away.
People who show up at Walmart the day after Thanksgiving have a phsyscological diseases. I don't believe it is about receving a discount, I think it goes much deeper than that.
But it goes waaaaayyyy deeper. And each and every time a Union collapses, the cheep American shopper may have had a big hand, but the straw that broke the Camels back is a variable.
Hostess was loosing money on paper for years. 2 reasons for that. One sales went down. After 12 years of the Bush and Obama administrations drilling healthier eating, it may have taken some hold. Second was a x10 pay increase for their executives during that time period.
The company has been grabbing for the last 30 years an increased market share of a decreasing industry. That would have caused them to fail eventually any way.
The union knew the risk walking in. The owner said clearly, if you do not get back to work I will close down the company...I feel bad for neither party.
Other Union houses shutting down...because of Japanese Steel, NAFTA, Outsourcing, new technology pushing old markets over the cliff..etc. etc. etc.
Capitalism is an ever evolving animal. The days of even needing a Union are largely gone. If you paid well, your work conditions are safe, and you get you time off...then a Union isn't for you. If not...well, I support the Wal Mart employee's right now...that company is probably the BIGGEST reason Unions are gone from this country...what comes around goes around.
No typical 'A bad, B good.' Capitalism and Democracy is much more complicated and evolving, as you say, than to try and discuss issues involving them, in global black and white terms, while reflecting a static state in each.
and I'm no knee-jerk union supporter. I've been a member of two unions, one of which led us out on a disastrous strike. I've also been a member of management that has fought to keep a union from getting certified. But tell me this: if only 7% of the workforce is union, why do right wingers think they're such a problem and blame them for present problems? I'm sure you'll say they long ago set the pattern for inflated pay and benefits, but even GM and Ford worked their way out from under that by wringing concessions from the unions. Last,I find it funny as hell to hear snowy talk about "my friend" Willy. Talk about crocodile tears.
The reason, is that 37.4% (2010) of Union workers are government workers, up from 36.8% in 2008, that is because government is growing exponentially. Unions workers are not growing in the private sector, in fact, unions are decreasing in private sector due basically to, less private sector labor force. Read the article and you'll see why I believe they are looking to take on Walmart, I believe they need to get a new base and with well over 2 million people working at Walmart what better business to go after, they see $$$$$ signs, nothing more nothing less.
It is the "Tribal Mentality" Tribal Mentality bands together beliefs, morals and the survival of their group. They are narrow minded. Irrarritional. Closed to outside interference. They move and respond as a group. They tend to be very basic, killing anything that threatens their closed group..
I doubt those are crocodile tears from Mr Snow, because Willy was a great debater, whether you agreed with him or not, he was a very effective communicator and I never felt he was ever "talking down" to me, he made his point and allowed me or whomever was engaging him at that moment, to state their position and he would come back and present his argument.

In psychology, it is a legitimate clinical study that has been done and has defined this mental state, it is within the confines of the study of the "mental set" and we all have certain "mental sets" that was all I was saying. Humans have a "tribal mentality" just as "dogs in pack".
They are sheep manipulated by the retailers and the media railing against China while buying not only buying cheap Chinese made products but also cheap Chines food.
Most don’t have sufficient education to read labels. You will be amazed to see most of the Tilapia and Salmon, Shrimp and even vegetables come from China.

Nice that you understand we are in a global ecomony regarding the workforce. It would be nice if you also understood the same thing is true about our economy. No matter what Obama or anybody else does, the fact that the European and Chinese economies are under-performing means our growth and job creation will be limited. We do not live in an economic vacuum.
