The electoral college was and still is, a bad idea.
It's retarded. The Presidency is the ONLY election where we decide who wins this way. We don't use electors to determine who wins a race in Congress or the Senate, now do we?
The argument for the electoral college is so that small states (i.e. states with small populations) don't get drowned out by large states.
Well, let's see how this is done. Each state is given the same number of electoral votes as they have seats in Congress. Vermont has 1 Congressman, but 2 Senators, therefore Vermont has 3 electoral votes.
California has 55 electoral votes because they have 53 Congressman and 2 Senators.
We have a total of 538 electoral votes out of a population nation wide of 310 million. This means that each electoral vote should represent 576,000 people. Does it? Nope. Each electoral vote in California represents 691,000 people. Each electoral vote in Vermont represents only 209,000 people.
That's right. Your vote is 3 times more valuable in electing a President if you live in Vermont than if you live in California.
Why is this a good thing?
So we're told the point of this is to make sure that small states don't get drowned out. So we give them a ton more power proportionally than big states. Does this mean that small states are more important come election time?
Nope. The only states that really matter come election time aren't small states or big states, but swing states.
For some reason, Florida and Ohio get a ton of say in who gets elected President. Neither state is particularly large or small. Their voters just get more say in things than the rest of us.
This is no way to run an election. I would rather people campaigned based upon where the people of this country actually live. Why the fuck do the voters in Iowa get such a big say in how the primary process works out? Shouldn't people in New York, Texas, and California have a bigger say in things? You know...where Americans actually fucking live!
It's time to end this shit, folks. Let's get rid of the electoral college once and for all. There's no damn reason why when voting for President, that my vote in Virginia doesn't cancel out someone else's vote for the other guy in California.
The smaller states would have never joined in the first place if they thought the bigger states would be super dominant. If you want to undo what was agreed upon, you have to let the states leave the union.
It's pissing in the wind to ate that argument, it is in the constitution and a damn near impossible to change.
Or is this a plan to stop the reelection of President Obama, by abolishing the Electoral College before they can cast ballots?
On a serious note. It would take a Constitutional Amendment to eliminate the Electoral College. It would need 38 states to pass, and most of the small states would not support this change.
in the ACA as to stupid Southern states refusing to set up exchanges having them set up for them by HHS (like Jawjaw the hick capital of the world, NO, and Mississipi. They don't stand a chance.
