Smart Move On Obama's Part Aimed At 2012

Except for the small 2 percentage points in FICA lasting just one year, there are NO tax CUTS here. Without this move it would have been the largest tax increase.

What matters in the next two years is whether or not the GOP can do anything to curb spending, big time. If they have no stomach for it then they too shall suffer.

The facts are already in. They won't work.

It's also not the 2nd biggest tax break in history. Not even close. It's more like a continuation of the smallest top marginal tax break in history. Why is it the smallest? Because top marginal tax rates are already so incredibly low.

The indes that moved away were angry at more than just tax issues.

The health care act will be a biggie.  If premiums are going up, if policies are being changed,
if costs are rising and they can be reasonably related to Obama-care, people will be rather peeved.

The same will hold true on a lot of other issues.  If the regulatory things he tries to push through as a substitute of cap-and-trade increase energy costs, if there is another increase in gas costs and we haven't expanded interanl capacities and coal costs twice as much, he will bear the brunt of it.

In any event, even if the tax issue doesn't reduce unemployment, for many people there is one place where the buck stops, regardless of that one issue.

Obama gave the GOP alot of what they wanted. He got alot of what he wanted. The Liberals are pissed off. In 2 years when he's up for reelection either the GOP tax cutting policies will reduce unemployment, or it won't . If it doesn't, Obama can say, guess what? I did what you told me to do. I cut taxes again and it didn't work. It didn't reduce unemployment. Your economic policy SUCKS. It doesn't work. If it does work, then Obama signed the second largest tax cut in history into law and guess what? He gets to take credit for it. It's a great issue going into 2012.

but I don't think he wanted the compromise. He really needs to be able to say I promished this and I delivered. Exporation of those Taxes was one of the promises. He is running into the danger of looking like another stuffed shirt, bull shit politician where he use to be a bull shit stuffed shirt politician.

There is a distinction, however it is without merit.

Like Craig Crawford says ''Obama who begins running for reelection next year will appear nothing like the liberal-leaning change agent who first got elected'' :) Obama knows if the economy was bad unemployment high numbers that  he will not get elected so I think  he secretly loves  the compromise since he knows raising any  tax during a  recession is not wise.

He might like the compromise for political reason. He is already running for re-election, has been from the day he took office.

If the economy is bad in the fall of 2012 and they say unempolyment will still be high he can't afford the Rep's saying he raised taxes and killed jobs. He can afford to say, I extended unemployment benifits to ease the pain.

What he would have liked was higher taxes on the rich, say people earning over $250,000, and unemployment insurance extension.
