Big Pile from Bill Kile - How about FULL DISCLOSURE?
Yeah, that's right. Full disclosure. Ever heard of it? Ever seen it? When they run those political ads on tv or in magazines, they have to put that fine print at the bottom to let viewers or readers know who is paying for the ad. Like tobacco companies, oil companies, insurance conglmoerates, etc. etc.
That press release was written by the MINORITY members of the Senate Committee on Environmental and Public Works. Which means it was written by a panel made up solely by REPUBLICANS! D-oh! Republican's are always on the side of big business. George Bush's first appointee to the EPA wanted to eliminate all government oversight of potential industrial polluters. She claimed that if the industry policed itself and there was no criminal or financial punishment, the companies would be more willing to admit fault and do a voluntary clean up. (Yeah, and Santa Claus is banging the tooth fairy.)
The statements made in that "report" are conclusory and represent the beliefs of a very small sliver of the scientific community. I would even like to know more about the "experts" who are quoted in the report. It's like the commercial that says "9 out of 10 doctors recommend Anacin for headaches." They don't tell us that these "doctors" are not physicians. They are Ph.D.s --- doctors of philosophy. Is it a truthful statement? Sure it is. Is it also misleading? Absolutely.
Let me give you another example. Doctor Laura Schlesinger is held up as an expert on psychology and relationships. Is she a doctor? Yes she is. What kind of doctor? She has her doctorate in PHYSICS!!! Who made her an expert on psychology?
100 years from now, when this planet is devastated by global warming and hundreds of thousand, if not millions of people have died, I'm sure you will be able to still find "experts" who say that there is no such thing as global warming. Just like you can still find "experts" today who insist that the earth is flat and the moon is made of cheese.
Please take notice moderators and fellow posters... This is not a character attack on Bill Kile, it is an attack on his beliefs. There is a big difference. It's the rightwing fanatics like Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh who make personal attacks.

Physics??? I doubt she even knows what an electron is.

I was wrong, but the essence of my comment is still valid. Laura Schlesinger's Ph.D. is in physiology which is a far cry from psychology or psychiatry. She has a Master's degree in psychology. That is only one year past a Bachelor's degree (if I'm not mistaken.) She's only marginally qualified to do more than mop up the vomit in the day room.
This hardly qualifies her to be dispensing advice to people who may have tenuous ties to reality or may be in a volatile state of mind.
Futhermore, she often tells people to take bold actions, without doing a complete and proper patient intake. Listening to a patient for 3-5 minutes does not give a therapist adequate information upon which to make a diagnosis or suggest any treatment protocols. And to make matters worse, she is dogmatic, abrasive, belligerent, and abusive. Not the qualities I look for in a therapist.

did you read to get your PhD in psychology that makes you such an authority on her capabilities?

One day I was listening to her radio show and in a single 60 minutes I heard her harangue a woman for being a working mom, telling her that her husband should go to night school after his 50+ hour per week job so that he could better his earning potential and let her stay home with the kids. Two callers later I heard Dr(?) Schlesinger berate another woman (who WAS a stay at home mom)
for not putting her foot down on her husband and tell him to reprioritize and put his good earning job on the back shelf in favor of spending more time with her and the kids.

So many of the extreme right wing, are somewhat intollerant of the plight of most people... and have no real compassion, much as those on the far left.... so sad... many in the middle are really left with no champions.
One of my favorite comparisons is:
One side measures compassion by how many are receiveing the help they need.
The other side measures it by how many no longer need that help.
the MD degree is an honorary doctorate... that is - it is a 'technical' degree or in the venacular, a 'vocational' degree... the true doctorate is the PhD or the harder to obtain European Doctorate of Science. Medical "doctors" are more correctly called physicians.
sorry... but if you want to be "technically correct" that is how it is...
As far as saying 9 out of 10 doctors... Where do you get that info? If it is dealing with "how a drug works" then yea, a PhD in pharmacology is more likley to know what is accurate than a general practice MD. If you are talking about who ran the clinical trial to determine what works for headaches then yea, an MD would be the best bet... and BOTH would be Doctors...
The more posts I read on this board, the more I realize how little our population really understands how the medical and health care system really works.... Sad. that!
