You know, I would tend to trust the Canadians and to a much lesser extent, the Aussies [even though they have inflicted Rupert Murdoch on us] and the Brits. But not very much.

Less so the Brits. Although it's getting that way, since the Falklands, and the persian gulf wars...probably more accurate to say they regard us as their traditional counterweight to the Continent - they have more freedom of movement if they find middle ground between us and the EU. So they won't bilge us as long as their troops are alongside us - just understand where they are coming from, and don't always expect literal truth.
Every country has - and should have - its own agenda. We're the largest, so we're most dependent on preserving the political environment (ie, have the most to lose if it changes) and we're also in the best position to roll with the punches, which is a better long term strategy than needing to win every round.

My suspicions are based on a simple fact - the more closely the US supports Israel the more difficulty the US faces in the Near East. It's not in the interest of the US to be perpetually in hostile and combative relationships with the Arab and Moslem worlds - but it sure is in Israel's interests to the the US so encumbered, vexed and indisposed. Call me inquiring [I appreciate ALL sarcasm, really, even if I'm the target], suspicious, paranoid and whatever, it's OK. But I just can't help wondering.
Also, can you deny the close intellectual, ideological and possibly emotional links between many of the rightfully reveiled NeoCons and the hardest liners in the Likud Party? Funny, no one ever seems to mention THAT criticism of the NeoCons. [If you know of one please be so kind...].
My apologies if i slighted any of the accomplishments of the Israelis in the various and sundry fields which you listed. I just wonder how much of this was ultimately financed by the US gov't, meaning the US taxpayers, meaning YOU AND ME, and how much was done totally under their own steam. But as far as I'm concerned, none of this remotely comes close to making up for the truckloads of trouble they deliver every day to our doorstep.

And I respect McCain's decision - there are probly no words for his anger when somebody like The Chimp impugns his record. It takes one hell of a lot of faith & discipline to deal with that level

I don't care so much about a person's beliefs, as whether they are fair, and can be dealt with. I expect to negotiate with political adversaries. I don't expect to be smeared or sandbagged. You can't negotiate with people who depend on the evangelical right, who believe eg Anglicans are the spirit of the anti-christ.

I think there is little doubt that Hussein had designs on WMD's. The thing that people who oppose the war have to address is: well, what DO we do with regimes like Hussein that are fundamentally dangerous? Nothing?
I opposed the war because it didn't have the kind of support that would allow it to succeed. Bush made a poor case - he didn't draw the connections well enough, he mislead when the argument was weak (the 9/11 link for example).
My deepest contempt for him is he squandered the opportunity to do something with 9/11 that could have galvanized the world. I think his inability to generate the kinds of leadership and sustainable vision are a direct result of a) his obviously marginal intellect and inability to pull together a coherent argument and b) enough conflict of interest that his motives to commit us to war come reasonably into question. You may not commit this country to war successfully unless you have a clear moral position that is beyond reproach. His leap to Iraq without an adequate logic trail lead to these kinds of questions, deserved or not.
I think we've become so accustomed to Dubya's cluelessness that we forget we've had presidents that could actually lead, and could galvanize our allies into acting against terrorism. And you're right, his limitations are obvious - I'm not so kindly disposed to the RNC that he shills for - these are people with the brains and experience to know what they're doing.
What do we do? That's always a judgment call. But it's always a very good idea to have a plan, and that seems to have been overlooked here.
