Dubya's already gone with Alberto Gonzales for AG and he has a lot of respect for Condi Rice....makes ya wonder! But what the heck are the rules for choosing a successor, should it become necessary. Does the EC figure into it at this point?
Cheney is not an option so it would be a good chance to groom the next republican candidate. Incumbancy is a great lead and I didnt expect Cheney to bow out until 1 or 2 years before the next election using a health related out. Dont expect a northern candidate as the southern strategy is still in effect. Probably a southern governor or congressional candidate. As much as i want to think Guilianni, ( to liberal for the party primary)and he would have a cross over appeal,not going to happen. My guess Bill Frist.
I don't like alot of what he stands for, but what he DEFINITELY is, is a man of integrity, and highly respected by both parties. We all know of the overtures Kerry made to McCain before the election. There was good reason for it, and in many ways, it made political sense. I think it still does. But, Bush and company don't like McCain. They reward loyalty. Look for someone already in the Bush inner circle being surrounded by grooms. Frist is a definite consideration, but he has many enemies, and is relatively new to the scene. Rudy Guiiani can take his pick of any cabinet post he wants just about, but he's not the heir apparent. Not yet. He will be the fallback more moderate candidate in 2008 if the midterms of 2006 indicate a backlash to the moral values crowd. The governors of Florida and California present some intriguing possibilities, but that would really take some doing. Anyway, speculation aside, I think by 2008, the truth of the Bush administrations rampant corruption will have been revealed, and the name Bush will be as reviled as Nixon's. One can always hope for the truth to win out.
