Rupert Murdoch's WSJ editorial: "Trump's Carrier Shakedown".....

I think the Carrier Deal was a one time event, despite both Trump and the media making such a big deal out of it. The Carrier deal was worth it to both Trump and Pence spending a lot of political capital to make happen because Trump campaigned so hard on it during the campaign AND it was a bit unique in the fact the parent company did so much business with the Federal Government giving Trump/Pence a lot of leverage to work with.

Trump hopefully realizes he can't go company to company and make deals with every one of them to keep them here. I view the Carrier deal as a one time event and not something we are likely to see too much of in the future. Or at least I hope not. I've said it before under Democratic administrations and my view hasn't changed just because the guy in the White House is from the other side, Governments role is not to "meddle" with private enterprise, Government can do the most good by creating an environment where private enterprise can thrive.

.....the decades old issue of U.S. factories moving overseas is solved immediately. Unfortunately we've had clueless buffoons in government, influenced by the trade lobbyists, negotiating our trade pacts. NAFTA and all the other negotiated trade pacts have purposely failed to impose wage and environmental parity tariffs on goods manufactured in factories overseas. For example, if the cost of labor in the United States is $30/hour and in Mexico it is $4/hour for comparable work, we know the number of  man-hours it takes to assemble say a Carrier air conditioner, we multiply that by $26 and that's the import tariff on a Carrier air conditioner.

The same applies for environmental parity, if the ability to pollute in another country vs. not being able to pollute in the United States provides a "savings" of $10 million a year and the factory produces 1 million things in a year then the per-item import tariff is $10.

Bingo, problem solved and factories remain stateside in the U.S. I've got to give Trump credit for seeing how serious a problem this trade issue was going to be for Democrats, particularly in the rust belt, and taking full advantage of it.

The more I hear about this deal the less I like it. I am not as sure as you this will be a one time event. I would think not as Trump will most likely do many more of these for maximum PR value.

I am just glad we have so many liberal converts to conservative economic policy. Suddenly they are all worried about the bottom line to John Q. Taxpayer.

Where the fuck were they during the Obama admin?

Now that it's Trump, it quite a different story with them.

Like you, I hope this is a one time, or at least isolated and rare occurrence. Quite frankly, I don't see how this can be repeated on a macro level. I've said it a thousand times, I am NOT at Republican, while it might be true that Trump would have to REALLY fuck up for me to wish we had Hillary instead, but that doesn't mean that Trump is going to get a pass from me on everything he does.

BTW in the Carrier deal, the bottom line to the Indiana taxpayer is a net gain, by a huge margin. I just don't see hundreds or even dozens of these deals happening, nor do I want to.

What's to stop Corp X from going public and saying they will be moving their widget factory to Mexico? Then...BOOM! In comes Trump Inc, with major concessions, and Corp X gets what they want, knowing full well they pulled off a financial coup to get the feds to give them a great deal when they had no intent on leaving in the first place.

I think Trump is smarter than that. I hope he is. The Carrier/UT deal had $5.6 billion in fed contracts hanging over its head, so the leverage he had there was as good as it gets but every corp out there will now watching closely as to how he handles the next 3-4 deals.

That I was beside myself that I didn't finish the last part, didn't want to spoil our "Coming together moment"...C'mon Gag did you feel it there for a moment..just a little??....lol
Yes, like I mentioned before. I get this deal, it had to be made one way or the other. It's window dressing. I just hope it isn't a thing of the future. And I know the word "Bribe" was harsh...see Puffy, I'm being kinder in my rhetoric..

The "savings" Carrier was looking at was $65,000,000 a year by moving to Mexico. So that is $65,000,000 a year that stays in Indiana, that's the direct impact, and keep in mind that $65,000,000 that stays in the local area gets spent in the local restaurants, dry cleaners, grocery stores, etc.

The concession by the tax payers is $700,000 in "reduced" state taxes paid by Carrier. Keep in mind that Carrier is still going to be paying taxes, that number is just reduced by $700,000 a year.

Yes, the taxpayers of Indiana come out way ahead in this deal, BUT I completely agree this could set a bad precedent if other companies are going to expect "special" deals to stay in the US.

You will forget all about having agreed with me yet again. lol

I seriously doubt this will become a thing of the future. I don't see how the federal government can get industry after industry to stay here through "bribery" (see I used it too) alone. Although if we could save jobs that pay over $30 hr by giving a $700 a year bribe for each one, I'd have to say THAT would be a pretty damn good deal. but alas, that simply is NOT going to happen.

The fact that if 1100 people lost their job that would be 1100 less people paying tax

In addition to the fact the  deal keeps 1100 people from going on unemployment, food stamps, welfare and other public assistance programs that burden the tax payer.

The Indiana taxpayers are subsidizing Carrier's corporate welfare program to the tune of 7 million and footing the bill for those jobs (Carrier is still moving 1300 jobs to Mexico).
