Hmm, this obviously will piss alot of people off, but what's the big deal?  Isn't Germany the shining example of a modern society in all of it's socalistic glory?

So she dosen't take the job in the brothel.  So she looses her benifits.  Big whoop.  I bet the real story behind there is that she was dragging her heels and not looking for work very hard - either that or perhaps she isn't employable.  Either way, I bet she will find a job now in short order now that her back is up against the wall. (pun intended)

Every human has the right to certian things, but free healthcare is not one of them.  In order for that to be given to a society at large, well then some freedoms must be surrendered (choise of doctors, access to the best care, a say in your health care).  This is merely a logical extension of the trade off.

Yeah, I bet the law will be changed so that she won't have to do that on 'moral' or other grounds.  However, where do you draw that line?  Hmmm, what happens if someone that is a teetotaler has to work in a bar?  An Atheist forced to work in a church?  A Christian Fundementalist forced to work in an Abortion clinic?  You see the problem?  The list could go on & on on exceptions on moral grounds.


By the way,,,,, how big are her tits?  (evil antagonistic grin)

Would you say the same if you were in her position, but your option was to work as a male prostitute(servicing other males)?

At its essence, this sounds like an unintended result of an honest attempt at social program reform.  Although, I will say that excluding prostitution is a slippery slope - what if it was a bartender job for someone who didn't like to drink, or an anti-smoking advocate forced to take a job at a tobacco company.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, A few on this board have argued that richer social programs are one of the major reasons that many European countries enjoy a higher standard of living than the US.  This, however, shows that said programs are becoming prohibitively expensive to those economies which, by the way, are already straining to provide retiree programs.  It will be interesting to see how this trends over the next decade, but I suspect we'll see the Europeans come closer to the US in terms of social security type of benefits (or go the way of France and become a 3rd world country).

The higher standard of living in European countries is due to higher taxes, and more equitable spread of wealth in the society. CEOs don't make 3000 times more money than entry level employees.

They certainly seem to be working on it but today, they're probably still 1st.  Southern Italy, though....

Oh come on please, I understand you are trying to make a point - but that is ignoring the fact that prior to taking a job that would be objectionable to anyone there are plenty of jobs for people to take.  It just so happens that when you have a system that rewards people for failing - there is no incentive to strive to succeed as you have here.

What is to prevent this woman from taking a job that is "beneath" her, get a job in McDonald's, in a hotel (front desk, maid, janitor - whatever), hell, if she's been offered a job in a brothel, she obviously is capable of picking up a pickax and a shovel - perhaps she should get a blue collar job in construction.

When I was her age, I didn't have health coverage - but that was by choise since I didn't want to work at a job that provided it - I was busy doing other things.  She isn't *forced* to work there - she could deny the benifits.

Read the article again, it sounds as if she WAS willing to take a low level position.

We are very fortunate and it is difficult to remember this.  There are people who are simply unable to find work for whatever reason, it may not be a choice.  Here in Seattle two years ago (and it's gotten worse) when I advertised to hire a file clerk I received over 500 resumes.  There were only about 240 positions listed in the Sunday classifieds.  Granted there are many more positions avaialble that are not listed but it takes skill and know-how to find many of them.  

Two years later, 7 1/2 years in senior management and business I sent out over 150 resumes and cover letter before I got a single interview, for a position which was identicle to my previous one, in the same industry, for a similar sized business in the same market segment... letters of recommendation, three interviews, no job.  So I was fortunate enough to be able to put myself into massage school - which was my original passion anyways.  Funny how that works sometimes.  Though after six months of unemployment, how many would be able to afford to return to school without a job and trying to put food on the table?

There are places in the world where the unemployment rate is much higher than Seattle.  

I'm disinclined to comment on the "moral clause" in reguards to benefits as there was a valid point mentioned - slippery slope.  Where would you draw the line?  This seems to be an unforseen setback to legalization.

Were here I'd have taken the job and just refused to more than do what I wanted to do...
