A true "Profile in Courage", especially in these times when the Christian right in shoving their religion, prejudices and morality down the throat of the rest of us.

Today Jim McDermott led the Pledge of Allegiance on The Hill.

He left out the "under God" part.

When questioned, the 67 year old Congressman said as a child he was brought up to say it without that phrase.

The "under God" phrase was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 during the McCarthyism HUAC witch hunts.

I live in McDermott's district. He can't lose. Very liberal Seattle district. He normally wins by 60-70%.

He is a gadfly though. But his district continues to return him.
