BAGHDAD, Oct. 12 -- Local insurgents in the city of Fallujah are turning against the foreign fighters who have been their allies in the rebellion that has held the U.S. military at bay in parts of Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland, according to Fallujah residents, insurgent leaders and Iraqi and U.S. officials. . . .
"If the Arabs will not leave willingly, we will make them leave by force," said Jamal Adnan, a taxi driver who left his house in Fallujah's Shurta neighborhood a month ago after the house next door was bombed by U.S. aircraft targeting foreign insurgents. . . . Several local leaders of the insurgency say they, too, want to expel the foreigners, whom they scorn as terrorists. They heap particular contempt on Abu Musab Zarqawi, the Jordanian whose Monotheism and Jihad group has asserted responsibility for many of the deadliest attacks across Iraq, including videotaped beheadings.
Although the details are secret, American and Iraqi troops are on the offensive against Sunni Arab and terrorist gangs. Over a year of effort in building up an intelligence network among the population has paid off. Even in the Sunni Arab areas, many people are fed up with the lawlessness and violence created where the gangs operate. So information comes in about who is who and is doing what. This provides more, and higher quality, targets for raids. The ground units usually surround houses or compounds at night and arrest people, and seize weapons, bomb making equipment and documents, without a shot being fired. Some 30 areas have been identified as occupied and influenced by various gangs. The process of clearing out these areas has apparently been underway for two weeks. Not a lot of publicity for this effort, as keeping the opposition guessing is a powerful weapon.
What they tell me is the greatest fear among Iraqis is that we will pull out! Guess who they are supporting for President?
Interesting that letters from Iraq don't share the gloom of our national media! It's not unlike the Tet Offensive where we kicked the NVA's asses, but Walter Cronkite was telling the American people that we lost!
Geeze Bri- what would you have heard in the ARVN Officer's Mess?
Soldiers tend to talk mainly to friendlies- journalists talk to all sides.
And the power of Tet, which I will freely say WAS a Victory for the US in the short run, was that it came just as MACV was saying the VC/NVA we incapable of an offensive. That lie (which was a truth after Tet) was what lost Cronkite.
It's similar to the Spanish Bombing's effect on their elections. They tossed out the side that they felt had lied about the "War on Terror" . Had Aznar said that it might have been Al Q, he might still be in office. Try to remember Spain has fought ETA for longer than we have been serious about terror.
I will wager that most Iraqis are trying to get through their day, not worrying about who the yank prez will be.
they were integrated on a major scale. Interpreters and advisors were all over. But it was really weird. U.S forces were in a crazy situation where you had to tour a year but you didn't arrive and leave as a unit. You joined a unit upon arriving in Vietnam. The unit cohesion really kind of suffered as people were coming and going and short-timers were getting moved to different units. The other side of this cluster-f**k was the poor ARVN officers that were in frontline action for years due to the men with political pull getting the non-frontline jobs. When the south fell, they were slaughtered cause the local Viet Cong leaders took names. It was horrible and sad for the family survivors. Lots of South Vietnamese interpreters had a dozen different U.S. military interpreter assignments. And they were butchered if they had pissed any Viet Cong off and didn't get out.
Good stuff- thanks for the tip- a lot of stuff one knew, but good to see it laid out.
And while I think VietNam was a strategic mistake - know a lot of good people did good work there. Same with Iraq. I just wish those resources were being put to better use actually finishing the Afghan job...
