I had earlier posted something about Israel and Iran relationship in the period of 1948 - 1988.  Here is the closure:

Due to common threats, the relationship between Iran and Israel started at the inception of Israel.  This  continued after the revolution, and through the Iran-Iraq war till 1988.

Israel continuously supported Iran in that war.  Iran-Contra affair raised the curtain just a little. Our policy towards Iran was always amateurish, and based on poor understanding of the culture.

In 1988, the U.S. forced then Prime Minster of Israel [Yitzhak Shamir I think], to write a letter to Saddam Hossein [I am serious!] offering support against Iranians in the war.  The Israelis were very reluctant, but finally the letter was written, and offered to Tariq Azziz   by a very senior official of our government.  It could have been Rumsfeld, but I don’t remember the name. Tariq Azziz apparently told our official if he gave the letter to Saddam, Saddam would shoot him on the spot!!!

Somehow, a copy of the letter found its way to Iranian officials.  Iran felt betrayed by the Israelis, and the 40-year-old relationship ended.

The relationship has been quite bitter after that. But, due to strategic reasons, it is very unlikely Israel will attack Iran.

In the 70s, we had a great relationship with Iran, and many of our major corporations had vast activities there.  It was good for all sides.  But, we failed to respond to the needs and desires of the Iranian middle class for political freedom.

Most of us who were there in the 70s, have nothing but fond memories …  Tehran was a great city for fun … rivaling the best capitals of Europe, and what a hospitable people.

A vast majority of Americans have no clue that indeed Iran and Israel actually did have good ties for a very long time.
The bigger problem with our policy in the Middle East is exactly what you mentioned and not exclusive to Iran.  We completely abandonned our desire to promote democracy and ignored the plight of the middle classes, while propping up exactly the type of tyrants and dictators we defeated in Europe in WW2.  We are the ones who created, financed, supported, and protecetd most of the corrupt regimes there and still continue to do so.
And then we simply can't figure out why the hell they hate us so much!!  But they hate us for our freedoms don't they???  Ahhhhhhhh, ignorance truly is bliss for the ignorant only though!!

this has nothing to do with the israeli/iranian duo but...
when i was in college mid 70's there were alot of middle eastern students, mainly from s.a. and iran.
i befriended an iranian, and he was always warning me of the saudia's saying they were the ones that would stab the u.s. in the back and they were the ones that hated the united states.
this was back in the 70's
