Defining a Liberal, in Today's Climate, Once and For All

Since the term Liberal is thrown around here as if it is a libel. Let's address some of the values that define a liberal in today's climate, at least in idealistic terms:

- Health insurance for everyone

- Free education [a great gift for many of the Republican ilk]

- A robust safety net for the poor

- A community free of racism

Let's not forget, it was FDR who stood up to Hitler and Mussolini, and Truman who resorted to nuclear weapon, when it was warranted.

Now, of course you Republicans don't believe in any of these, and so be it.  Your masterful work is how so many poor are member of your club!

Thanks to upstarter for earlier pointing out the obvious.

According to your definition, you could very well just replace the word liberal with communist.

Last time I checked, it was the individual's responsibility to provide their own healtchare, education, and savings account so that they did have a saftey net.

But never mind the fact that people tend to spend all that they earn why?  well partly because people know there is no consequence if they dont'.  (free emergency room visits, unemployment, foodstamps, the list goes on).

Last time I checked the constitution, the guiding principal was to keep government intrusion OUT of our lives.  It's not a document outlining what the government should do for us.  I think the communists here in this country ought to go back & re-read the constitution.

Oh, and as far as racimsm, it was also pointed out earlier that it was the Republicans who voted for & got passed the Civil Rights act.  And let's not forget that pesky history stuff where the Democrats fought freeing the slaves during the Civil war when a Republican president freed them.

"Health insurance for everyone"?
Tax the crap out of everybody and drive away jobs... France suffering into the foreseeable future with double-digit unemployment just like all the other socialist regimes in Europe.  Ability to provide socialist utopia crumbling around socialist leaders they do what all socialist do... Blame Bush and America!

"Free education [a great gift for many of the Republican ilk"?
We have "Free Education" in this country and it has been devastated by liberal socialist reform for the last 40 years!  The product of that miserable failure is all around us, and too many of those undereducated masses are allowed to enter colleges, teach in them and administer them!  What this country needs is another 10,000 B.A.'s in Gay, Lesbian and Trans Gender Studies running around!

"A robust safety net for the poor"?  As a conservative, I call that a JOB!

"A community free of racism"?
Like France where burning and the defacing of Synagogues are rampant and anti-Semitism is growing daily?  Or where Muslim woman are disallowed from covering their heads in public schools?

Like FDR and Truman who stood up to the evils of Hitler and Mussolini, Bush and the Republican Party are standing firm in the War on Terrorism!  Kudos’ to FDR, Truman and Bush!  The Democratic Party has become the party of the Vichy French!

Your race baiting and "two America's" tripe is just too much.  What people in America want is a chance to succeed, to be great, not be a serf in your Orwellian utopia!

We are already paying 30-50% in taxes yet the gov still can't provide "free" health insurance and education, how much more taxes do you want to pay?  If you are concerned about the high costs of insurance and education, how would making the government pay them solve anything?

As for a safety net for the poor, isn't that what charities are for?  People that want to help can give money (and they do give plenty) to charities, why is it the government's job to redistribute income?

Believe me, I used to think like you when I was a poor college student.  So easy to be a libral then.

Yes, a pillar of centrist socialised capitalism.  Largest investor in the US.  Strong growth for last 4 years. Able allyof the US, but not its total lap dog (except on Iraq- I will forgive them for that).  What is your point?

I can't help but think that they don't want your social darwinist war on the poor and ethnic either.

There are middle ways like Canada and Britain, or the Scandinavian countries. Take a look at Holland.

The world has many colours, with a lot of grey in the political sphere. Your classicly Anmerican attempt to keep it all Black and white is cute, but rather pathetic in a way.

The Angry White Man/Sore Winner(Whiner?) act is tedious, but amazingly prevalent.

I`m so glad to see a self proclaimed “liberal” putting into words, for all to see, the core beliefs of the far left. Nothing we on the other side could say would have as great an effect on the undecided as what you just set out as your agenda. You do understand that the government already takes a huge percentage of income in taxes and has done nothing to solve the problem. They just pull more people into the poverty class.
As far as racism is concerned, I had no idea that something as simple as electing a Democrat would cure such a deep-rooted problem. After eight years of  “The First Black President” the same divide is alive and well.
