Not a reason to avoid the vaccine. Shingles is painful but not deadly. Covid is deadly.
It depends on age and co-morbidities. Given your situation, I understand you opting for shingles over Covid if given the choice. That said, you should keep in mind that people in your age range sometimes die from shingles complications.

Given your health/age situation, it’s understandable you would take the pain of shingles over the dire consequences Covid would bring you. But the fact remains that a majority of healthy people will fair much better with Covid than shingles.

I had shingles a few years ago, at the time I was traveling to Costa Rica to see this one Tica on a very regular basis, I tried (and usually succeeded) in getting down there about twice a month.
