simply because America loves an underdog, and the way he was piled on from the Left made him a sympathetic figure. Voters were willing to look past his own shortcomings to see that if he couldn't get justice from the court system, they would give him justice at the ballot box, and they did, in spades.  

Seriously most people are hurting from the lefts fiscal irresponsibility that led to the massive inflation that we all suffer.
