I went to University of Oregon, Monterey Peninsula College, and UCLA before entering Bard College as a sophmore.  Since that rather unimpressive start, I have a B.A. in U.S. History, a second B.A. in Soviet Studies (Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies), a J.D., and an Ll.M. (masters of law - NYU)

So, someone went to a lot of colleges.  Wow, what a major scandal.

Re Harvard: six months ago a friend's daughter was asking me what I thought of Ivy League schools.  I told her they were great if you wanted to make contacts for future life, but if your desire was the quality of education, for the 40K per year, they weren't worth it.  I know a few Harvard, Yale, and Stamford grads, and have never been overly impressed.

I know I am not running for office, but if you look at the presidency, academic background is almost irrelevant.

One of the most effective presidents in getting stuff done was LBJ, whether you like him or not.  He went to South West Teachers' college.

Truman, one of the great presidents, was a drop out.

Wilson, the major intellectual, president of Princeton, but not a very effective president, was Ivy League from start to finish.

JFK went to Harvard and had great image, but really didn't accomplish much in three years.

What I am saying is that if you look at presidents and compare academic credentials to accomplishment there is no correlation, except for image.

I don't have time to look it up again, but if you compare Bush v. Gore in terms of education, Bush had a much better academic record.  I am not talking about where they went to school, although both could have gotten into any college based on the fact that both had elite family connections.

I am talking about grades, SATs, the whole range.  The Texas Dummy outscored Gore in every category.

But I guess education is no longer that important.

...you turn to palin's academic record?? LOL.

how i wish that our congress and senate were more of ordinary people...not lawyers who graduated from ivy leagues. they don't know what us, ordinary people need. they can't even fix social security. you put ordinary people on there, i think they'll be able to fix it in a month!

you're boring us, footlovr. find better substance.

shouldn't the people in our highest elected offices be from our finest schools, if possible? I agree, there's more than just where someone went to school, but in Palin's case, she's already bringing a very lightweight resume to the table, and not even offset by impressive academics. She's got nothing!

"Shouldn't the people in our highest elected offices be from our finest schools, if possible?" Quite possibly, one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read. I can only assume(and yes, I know what goes after that) that you were "educated" in one of our "finest schools". Let me guess, you're an ivy leaguer? If so, then you prove the point that most everyone who did not go to an Ivy League school thinks of those that did. Pompous wind bags who would prefer to hear their own voices, rather than partake in a two-sided conversation.
I could care less where a person went to college. That doesn't make the person any better. What makes the person better is what they did with their education. Gov. Palin worked in the private sector, worked in the media, and now in public service. I also think that when you have Gov., State of...wherever, that is a pretty good hit on the old resume. There has to have been something there for her to be elected governor of a fairly important state. So there goes your "lightweight resume" theory out the window. I commend her for getting a higher education, and through hard work, probably some luck, and effort, she is now the nominee for Vice President. Good for her.

He was also asked to leave Harvard after it came to light that he paid another student to take a test for him. Spanish test, I believe. His well connected father and famous brother weren't much help for him.

pedigree from a college of prestige ranking has no rational relationship to a President's greatness. Presidents Harry Truman and Abraham Lincoln as matter of fact both did not attend college. President Reagan graduated from a small Christian school.

YOur comment is sexist because many women have to follow their husbands and juggle college studies and families. Gov. Palin graduating is a testament to her tenacity and fortitude. She is courageous.

NO!

What a truly elitist concept. Are you an immigrant from India or someplace else where Cast systems are firmly entrenched?

Look up the original intent of the constitutional phrase, "Promote the general welfare."

good at looking up answers so they can regurgitate what their asshole profs said and do well. The ebst people tend not to be good students.

My motto in business is  NEVER! trust an A student with a challenging assignment, one that calls for thinking on your feet. They are super duper at research but so is Google.

...but i graduated from a state school. Not Ivy League, but good enough to know a shitty resume when I see one.

The reason Palin took six years and made several school changes were financial.  Her parents were both school teachers trying to put 4 kids through college at the same time.  She entered the Miss Alaska pageant to get the scholarship money, not to show her pretty face to judges.
This is pure middle class stuff.  Most kids west of the eastern coastal states never even consider the Ivy League schools.  I know one who got a perfect score on the SAT and later on the LSAT and went to state schools for his undergrad and law degrees.  Harvard sent him a letter trying to get him to come there and he simply wasn't interested.  Liberals tend to view where you got your education as the be all, end all in life.  The rest of the country is more interested in experience and accomplishment.
