Hugo Chavez seems to be the guy who convinced him. Chavez has been pushing Castro to adopt a more economic democracy approach than a communist approach. This idea has been picking up speed in South America for quite some time.

He is making perfect sense today. Economic lessons from Hugo? That's fucking rich. Chavez has taken a beautiful, resource rich paradise, and turned it into a cesspool of corruption and crime. Don't forget, I was there just about two months ago, and saw first hand what Hugo has done to that beautiful nation.

By contrast, I just got back from neighboring Colombia on Tuesday, and the contrast could not be plainer, thanks mainly to the "running dogs of capitalism". Colombia has pulled itself out of the third world, drug controlled pit it floundered in for several decades, and is now well on it's way to becoming a booming country, complete with a ever growing middle class.

Bark all you want, but the running dogs have done a thousand times more good for the people than have your heroes Hugo and Fidel.

needs it to work. Economic democracy has a chance because most places where its tried are economically viable and dont have to deal with very harsh US sanctions. As soon as these places become a threat to US capitalists the story changes.

Economic democracy is a growing idea in South America. It's a reaction to the neo-liberal economic model the US has been pushing on them for the last 30 some odd years, and has resulted in disaster.

The main difference I suppose one could say between capitalism, communism, and economic democracy is who gets to make all the important economic decisions. In capitalist economies the wealthy make those decisions. In communist economies the gov't makes those decisions. In economic democracy, people vote on those decisions.

This is a growing idea, and it's not going away. In Venezuela it's even resulted in a significant increase in productivity.

If you have some free time, take a look at this documentary that was made a few years back about the Economic Democracy movement in Argentina. It's fascinating stuff.

The fact is that the US sanctions and attacks  communist nations. The US supports insurrection in all countries that dont go along with US capitalism. 9/11 was the price that was paid for US imperialism. It is a price that the US will continue to pay and inflict on the US middle class.
