Looks like a chance that Mitt could win Fla ( according to most recent polling ) get the nomination & give BHO a run for his $. But many
conservative writers/pundits think Newt/Mitt fracas is ruining it for election & STILL clamor for a new candidate.

Sounds like the GOP needs a morale director; or, perhaps, a better POTUS candidate.

As you know, I carefully monitor polls ( some might say to nauseatng degree ) & consider myself a "political realist".

Obama is QUITE vunerable for several reasons : he has a 46% approval rating, "economic recovery is shaky" & Romney trails BHO by razor thin 1.9%
& is GOP candidate who polls best among independents.

With Romney having that good a shot, I'm really quite amazed how demoralized how many in GOP ( including yourself ) are.

I would guess it's because many in GOP distrust/dislike Romney & have no confidence in him as candidate. I have to say it's damned puzzling.

in '80, couldn't bear to vote for him or RR, so I voted for Anderson. In '84, given terrible choice of RR or Mondale, I voted that year, but not for the Presidency.

This has been obvious for months. And the power of the incumbency is even greater than the power that the buffet line holds over you . . . . .

That is one of the funniest cartoons I've ever seen.

But to be fair, Mitt was never a businessman but more of an investor (which is how he made the vast majority of his fortune).

He has his faults but so does everyone else.

I think he would make a fine President and would be far, far better than the man in office right now.

I'm simply looking at the facts.  Incumbent Presidents seldom lose.  Bush 41 did in 1992 but the economy took its hit right in the middle of the campaign and not a couple of years earlier like it has for Obama.  That gave Obama plenty of time to deflect the hits, blame his predecessor and wait for any marginal upturn he could get in the economy.

Carter lost but even a Ronal Reagan critic like you would have to admit that Reagan was a superior candidate and a larger-than-life personality.  And the hostage crisis and high mortgage rages were things that Carter could not overcome.

Ford really doesn't count because he was never elected and was in office for only a couple of years.

Before that, you have to go back to pre-WW II to find an incumbent losing.

And Bush 43 was certainly beatable in 2004 but the Dems were unable to do it. Despite the unpopular wars and the mass hatred that liberals had for Bush over his defeat of Gore in the 2000 election.

Look at the polls all you want. I feel more comfortable looking at history.

But find it sad he's pining for some "deus ex machina" consensus candidate to materialize and save the party.  Who?  From where?  There ain't anybody.  I still say Romney, despite his baggage, is the only one with a chance to beat Obama, because he'll appeal to the independents and that's where elections are won.  His Achilles heel is if evangelicals and Tea Partiers stay home because of his moderate record and Mormon faith.

From what I heard of an interview with him the other night, he will stubbornly give in and support Gingrich if Newt gets the nom but I doubt he will ever support Romney.


But who cares.  He is one guy and carries no influence.  Kinda like all the rest of us . . . . .

here's a defintion.
"The Latin phrase deus ex machina comes to English usage from Horace's Ars Poetica, where he instructs poets that they must never resort to a god from the machine to solve their plots. He refers to the conventions of Greek tragedy, where a crane (mekhane) was used to lower actors playing gods onto the stage. As a student of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, I've seen the device used quite often.  Like many conventions, it was adopted from Roman theater.  The sonnet form was also adopted from Roman literature.

Speaking of Independents, I'm surprised that an Independent hasn't made a competitive run for the White House as of late. You'd think the time would be right for the Indie party to shine and blame both the Republicans and Democrats for the US's current predicaments.
