On the Daily Beast that reflects some of views regarding our nation's entry to the Age of Terrorism and our ability to live in this world.  

Our borders were invaded by a foreign terrorist group that played by no rules of war and have no respect for humanity.  They are unlike any force our nation had to face, they belong to no nation, have no real organizational structure, but they have this radical ideology.  How do you combat them. How do you prepare the populace to deal with the fact that our leaders and our infrastructure will never be able to protect from "terrorism" foreign or domestic. Our leaders can only act to minimize the threat and act to minimize the impact of a successful terrorist attack.

This leads me to my point....Since the attempted on X-Mas attach those on the right have stated repeatedly that Obama isn't taking the "War on Terror" seriously.  Apparently, if you don't shout Terrorism from the highest roof top loud or often enough, you're soft on terror.  Those on the left state, that the Bush Admin created an environment where terrorism could spread unchecked because of the war in Iraq.

Regardless of your perspective, the central question is this.  Do you believe that the current political environment is really conducive to ensuring the populace is equipped to live in a world where terrorist activity can occur at any time and that the terrorist activity can be either domestic or foreign?  What do we need to do to ensure that the populace is prepared to live in this new world of terrorism?

OK, because you asked....

In the atmosphere of political correctness, no government can protect their people when that government insists on playing by a set of rules that defeat its ability to win...

I mean let's be real... when in the history of mankind, and more importantly, the history of war, has their ever been an instance of applying the constitutional benefits of the attacked party, to the person who did the attacking...

Here I am on the battlefield being shot at in a war.  When I capture my attacker, he's going to be sent to courthouse in my home country and given a trial as if he was citizen of my country.  I mean come on.... does anyone think you can win that kind of a war...

Like it or not, the Israelis have shown the world the most effective way to fight terrorism, and so far we haven't accepted the fact that they are right... In the battlefield, which is everywhere as it relates to terrorism, you shoot to kill, and you do everything you can to identify and target your opponent.

We, as a country don't have the guts for what it takes.  The Russians did back before the wall came down.  Ever wonder why no Russians were kidnapped in Lebannon, no Areoflot planes hijacked?  Because teh bad guys knew the retribution would be swift adn terrible.  The russians might not kill the bad guy, they'd kill his family, his pets, his neighbors, his cousins, his friends, anyone he knew.  No virgins for them since they weren't martyrs and all teh bad guy did was bring dishonor and shame on his family.  

We can't do that, hell we can't play loud music in their cells while their buddies whack the head of some innocent in u tube.  

These are people who don't want to negotiate or discuss things, they want you and me dead. Period.

This is not really the answer I was looking for....We can all question how we execute the supposed "War on Terror"  I say it this way because I hate euphemisms and in my opinion War on Terror should go in the same trash heap like War on Poverty, and War on Crime.  They're really just meaningless slogans.

I would also say that the Israeli's have not solved their terror issue.  They just strike back harder when they are attacked...it has not stopped terrorism from happening on their lands.

It is unrealistic to assume that the gov't will be able to prevent all terrorist attacks. It's a question of when it will happen not if it will happen.

Again...how does the gov't prepare the populace to live in this new reality?

Well, yes, "War on Terror" is a useless phrase when used by those who don't think we are at war with terrorists.  For those who think that if you simply ignore it that it will go away, then of course its a useless phrase.

And, yes, Israel certainly continues to experience terror.  But given their proximity to the "enemy" (terrorists), their methods certainly seem to be more productive (effective) than any other country's approach.  But clearly in "war" you have good days and bad..

Anyway, within the limits of how you wish the question to be interpreted, I suppose the simple answer is that the government ought to acknowledge that attacks will happen, and when they do, here is what the impacted folks should do... I mean those that survive the attack but might by ingured.

At the Naval War College, I did several of my papers on certain aspects of future conflicts, what we called at the time, MOOTW, Military Operations Other Than War.  Essentially what you do when you are not fighting nation states but trans national threats along clutural fault lines.  

Everyone wants to be politically correct  and say we can just buy the world a coke and they will all love us.  They will love us when we are under Sharia law or dead.  

One of the best books that came out recently is Ralph Peters Book.  Strips away all the niceties and reaches the conclusion that we are headed to a war of extermination, sort of a final show down.  Bad part is the bastards nuked Vegas, some of my favorite gals are there.  

I'm beginning to think there really is a "supreme" being (god).... his name was Nostradamus..... I think one of his final predictions was muslim vs christians wasn't it?  Or was it really a prediction if he already knew ahead of time what would happen since he controlled it... lol   .... scary

Just to be clear however, I consider all of those folks.. germans, japs, etc... at the time to have been terrorists just like the radical M's today.. and in your own description, we kicked their ass... But take your point just a bit further... we kicked their ass with no apology, no political correctness, and with everything in the arsenal... We decided it was war and we fought it accordingly with an intent to win ... period...

The issue of today, I think, is that our own government doesn't really seem to act as if it is War... in deed, since OB came to power, many of his associates would like to even call it something other than War, they don't even want War prisoners hence they intend to send them into our judicial system in our non military prisons...  They want to prosecute our intelligence agents who only did the job they were asked to do and maybe got a little zealous...

I doubt we would have kicked any of those asses you mention if the OB team were in charge back then...

Save your breath. You can hate all the haters in America all you want but you'll never be able to gloss over or downplay the actions of the terrorists from the Middle East no matter how hard you try.

First off, turn all the Muslims into Soylent Green, that way we can feed all the starving assholes in Darfur who insist on living in a fucking wasteland where nothing grows.

We tell all the southerns that the Feds / Yankees like in breeding and NASCAR.  They will abandon that stuff quicker then a  frat boy on free beer,  One, two generations and they will all start to die off and the south will be depopulated.  We can re populate Alabama with all the Rocket Scientists, from the show, the Jersey Shore.

Might come as a shock to the good liberal Yankees but the most bigoted and racist folks aren't down in teh deep south, they are in New England. Back in my younger days the Navy saw fit to send the ship to Maine for an overhaul.  I have never encountered the kind of blatant racism that I saw up there. If you were not white you had to show three picture IDs to get served a drink. Of you'd get told we don't serve your kind here.

if an asian guy was refused service at a lunch counter in Birmingham because "we don't server your kind here" it would be front page news all over the country.  When it happened daily in Portland Maine (90-92) timeframe, no one cared.  It got so bad the Navy almost towed the ship out of there, we were going through an overhaul, part of an economic recovery since the city was going under and this kept the shipyard adn the city alive.  Only thing I had in my favor was as a Jew I was able to blend in a lot easier but if you worn anything like a Star of David out in public you were screwed.

While I -- as well as any other sane person -- am sickened by these attacks they in now way are comparable to the anti-American attacks from al-Queada, etc.

You obviously haven't spent much time on Chicago's south side or in New York City or any other northern major metropolitan area.

Cause most of the folk that don't know squat about the south think we are all a bunch of inbred, dumb ass, moon shine drinking, NASCAR driving, racist morons who made it to the third grade and are missing a bunch of their front teeth.  I am here to tell you we aren't all like that.  I made it to the 4th grade.


Just kidding, actually did my undergrad at Tulane.  But I did live south of I 10 in LA for 8 some odd years, live all over the lower three counties of Mississippi (Gautier, Biloxi, Singing River, Gulfport, Pass Christian, and my favorite, Pascagoula for about 5 years).  

Also live in Newport RI for 5 years and Maine for almost 2.  New England is more racist than anywhere.  Don't believe me,   Put on an Italian flag sweat shirt and go walk up to the bar at Hills Tavern in South Boston.  See if you get served. Even better see if you can make it out alive.  

Or try downtown Portland Maine around dinner time.  Go with some friends who are Korean.  See how long you have to wait to get seated, if you get seated.  Try getting served at the bar.

An old shipmate who married a local and still lives up there told me the other day it has gotten better, he has only been called a gook twice this week and once was from his boss at the shipyard so that don't count.  (He is half Korean)

The south is racist, so is the midwest, left coast and the east coast.  At least in B'ham the folks were served, in Maine they would have been kicked out

The men are mostly drunk and the women are fat but when you spend more days below freezing than above can't say I blame them,I would drink too and a fat wench will keep you warm at night.

Somehow I got lucky and I have a lot of Asian GFs, but not lucky enough to be intimate with all of them, or even most of them lol.. One thing I have heard repeatedly from Asian ladies is "she has chinky eyes" when talking of the Asian competition...When I say you shouldn't be saying that, she will elaborate  its OK for a Asian girl to notice another Asian girl has chinky eyes, and then ask me don't you see my eyes are not chinky..
The moral of the story.. There will always be something said that some will think is racist,even when there was no racism intended....

People are people, and yes racism exists. The last thing we need is a fucking lesson in race relations from another white liberal like WW, who plainly doesn't have a clue.

WW is just another white liberal suffering from "white guilt" who sees racism everywhere, even where it doesn't exist. I think that WW should spend  a little time in Compton or East LA  if he really wants to see racism in action.
