...as it turns out, Colorado didn't need to enact a single new gun control law. Nope. None at all. The only thing that really needed to happen was for the police....

Everyone of these killers has had red flags that should have been addressed before the shootings. If he threatened his doctor they should have arrested him and taken his guns, charging him with the crime. Surprised it actually got released and not covered up to protect the university and police from lawsuits.

is one level up from security guard. Someone that is fat, slow and stupid. This actually brings up an interesting question. Are the various university police departments independent of adjacent city and/or county law enforcement agencies? I wonder if they are part of a Fusion Center, which would have shared this information across multiple jurisdictions immediately. Fusion Centers were created by Homeland Security.

They are seperate entities I believe, different states/schools might have different laws/rules but most of them are seperate. Many of them still overlook rape because they dont want to tarnish the schools image, its gotten better and some states have passed manditory reporting to the real police but still it happens.
Any and all threats should be taken seriously if they are confessed to a psychiatrist and they report. Its fucked up that it wasnt, if someone is already seeking help because they are having trouble coping and they start making threats its criminal not to take it seriously. Esp if something happens.

But you don't get arrested in this country until you actually commit a crime. I don't know all the details but until a threatened person files a restraining order or presses charges...what is LE supposed to do...and I'm not talking Campus Police either.  I know these crime or horrific, but can you imagine a country where you can be arrested for a perceived threat?  It's already bad enough to travel on an airplane...imagine that three fold across this country all in the guise of making us safe.

You did read the atricle right? It was a mental health professional following the law and reporting a threat she obviously took seriously. With threatening text messages as well it should be criminal that the cops didnt even question him, or forward the information to the real police. People are detained all the time and questioned. You can be held up to 72 hours and never charged with very little evidence actually. If he told his psychiatrist this information theres a very good chance it was a cry for help and he very well could have admitted his intentions to the police when questioned. It borders on criminal for the campus police to have done nothing and if it was any other man on the street who had this information and did nothing they would be charged as an accomplice.
There have been to many restrictions on personal freedoms in the name of our safety to ignore an issue such as this. I believe the law on the books makes it a crime for his psychiatrist to not have reported the threats, shouldnt the same be true for the police if they dont take an hour to question the guy in over the next month?
Hind sight is always 20/20 I get that. But its not like he made one small statement to a friend. He was talking to a mental health professional and if she took it seriously the police dam sure should have.

If you can lose firearms rights for threatening a wife, ex, gf ect, hell any threat to kill someone they can take every firearm you own. Period.
What are the chance s he would have had $2000.00 + to rebuy the weapons and bail himself out? Maybe it would have gotten him committed, you and I cant say but to think doing NOTHING was right youre an idiot period and I dont really think you believe that.
Its a felony to threaten someone s life in almost every state, so the prisions are packed. We just ignore crimes and blame the fucking guns? How backward is that? What good will new laws do when you admit in your post that prisons are packed and we cant enforce the ones we have because of it?
Also I never said a word about locking him in prison, maybe taking the guns he did have at the time and charging him so he couldnt buy more from FFL dealers would have been enough. I know all about private sale loop holes. Spare me the because of that the police should have done absolutely fucking nothing. If I threaten someone I expect to be at the very least talked to.
Women attacked and killed by their exs is something neither here nor there in this case and I wasnt talking about it. I would say if their exs didnt have a gun theyd have used a knife or a bat. Its nieve to believe that a crime of passion the weapon is really to blame or lack of a weapon would have prevented it. Between 1976 and 1996, 65 percent of the male and female victims of intimate partner homicides were killed with a firearm. And while rates of intimate partner homicide have been declining, the ratio of female-to-male victims has risen. That means out of the 605 intimate aquantance murders in 2000 393 died from a firearm. How could it happen that the other 202 died? Guns werent used, how could this happen??? Men are bigger and stronger than women, women are killed every day by simple strangulation.

because he had "homicidal thoughts"?

Hell, you think our prisons are packed now?  If they locked up everyone with "homicidal thoughts", the population would double.

And, how many women get killed even though they take out a restraining order against someone?

Spare us your phony cryfest about "no new laws."

Any nut can go to a gun show and buy any fucking weapon they want..........including those with "homicidal thoughts."

if it was a real threat and a mental health professional thought it was important enough to report it should have been addressed. If you make a terroristic threat the police have the right to question, hold you and confinscate your guns. Hold you for 72 hr min without charges and question you. Taking his guns and ammunition might have prevented this. A search warrant which would have been easy to get with threatening text messages and even just the sworn testimony of his psychiatrist and might have uncovered his note book or plans. The campus police failed horribly and to deny that is wrong. He might have even admitted it if questioned, but we'll never know.
You want the police to be your only true protection but have that negative of a view of them?
I think background checks for every gun sale are needed. I cant change it or pass laws to change it. Write to your politicians, most states are either going to pass background check legislation or already have. Medical reporting of people being treated for mental illness needs to be addressed as well but even the liberal dems dont seem to support that.

I said in my first post hind sight was 20/20.... but to think that he absolutely wouldnt have admitted it is wrong. At the very least they could have taken his firearms and he could have sued to get them back. Maybe his family would have had to bail him out if he'd been arrested and could have gotten him help. There are way to many variables to guess as to what might have happened. That said it was a mental health professional asking them to look into it. It should have been done and than we wouldnt be arguing what might have beens.
I have never said you want to get rid of all guns, but you dont own one right? I think you've said you dont need one and thats your own choice. All I've ever said was your idea of gun rights and mine were different and argued why I have the beliefs I do.

docs for the meds.  Some are legit Dxs and the majority aren't. And a whole shitload of them stockpile guns and are running to the gun stores for more and are idiots who believe the black chopper syndrome as well as that the Federal gov is "stockpiling" LOL upon LOL ammo.

All this sound and fury for nothing. The gun lobby and NRA will make sure that the congress they own won't pass shit and the death by gun stats will soar.

who such a negative opinion... if he broke the law taking his guns is the very least of what should have happened. Period. If you beat you SO and lose firearms rights too fucking bad. If you commit a felony and lose them too fucking bad. I have and will never answer that question differently.
Homeland security bought more bullets than the US military has used in Iraq and Afghanistan in 10 years. It raises some questions, esp when most them are anti civilian rounds. Not even allowed during war times because they are banned by the Geneva convention. Thats it. Plain and simple.
Never did I mention obama and hitler together or the antichrist.

Dr. Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado, Denver, told police in June that the shooting suspect also threatened and intimidated her. Direct quote and thats all it should have taken esp if some of them were text messages. Discounting the fact that she was a mental health professional bring it to their attention. Her word alone probably would be enough for a warrant in all 50 states. if there were threatening texts, that alone should have been.
Threatening bodily harm is a crime. Every state in the union.
Geneva convention actually doesnt outlaw torture in all cases. Read it. If you want the specific sections I can get them when I get home.

is suicidal thoughts. I doubt that homocidal, and suicidal thoughts are that far removed from each other. I also believe Holmes was suicidal, body armor or not, I don't believe he thought he would survive the police response to his actions.

This guy was arrested, detained, had his home searched, guns removed from his possession, and sent for a psychological evaluation. For trespassing and inquiring about school security.

I agree he appeard suspicious, but the only real charge was trespassing, and this was post Aroura/Newtown.

How come the murder stats have dropped nationwide since the early 90's than by roughly 33%? gun laws havent changed much and more people than ever have conceal and carry permits. Evryone one points to suicides as a viable gun stat. Its not, Many other countries with no public ownership of firearms have higher suicide rates. Japans is twice ours. 2/3's of all gun deaths are suicides. How do they do it in japan without firearms....?
