"California has made history by defeating Proposition 32, which sought to raise the state minimum wage from $16 to $18. This represents the first state in nearly three decades to reject a statewide minimum-wage increase. Over 50% of voters rejected the measure. Multiple organizations argue that the increase would hurt small businesses and raise costs for consumers." - Miami Herald
Many states have higher minimums and CA, at $16, is already among the highest. That probably explains why people said "enough." Here's a list by state.
To the best of my knowledge, most European countries don’t have one and their fast food workers make like $22 an hour. This is because they have meaningful unions. I think unions would be better off without a minimum wage. Give them something to really negotiate for.
…but I was surprised by the investment needed and how narrow the margins were. I might have gone and done it anyway, if Covid hadn’t happened. I always had a dream of opening a fast food joint that sold scrapple burgers with sides of sauerkraut and deep fried horse radish sticks. The only beverages would be pickle juice and regret.
