charge someone with greater crime that carries a longer prison sentence in order to get them to plead to a lesser crime (in this case, lying about Joe and Hunter' corruption) whether the lesser charge is true or not in order to reverse the former testimony on the lesser crime.  This is how they manipulate the narrative to be what they want it to be. If Smirnov were to stick to his prior testimony that the Bidens are corrupt, he would be facing a significantly longer sentence on the RECENT tax charges.  Anyone who believes this whole process is on the up and up is incredibly naive, but if any of us were in Smirnov's position, we would probably lie about what we said previously and make the deal, too.

"According to the terms of the plea agreement, Smirnov will plead guilty to one count of causing the creation of a false record in a federal investigation and three counts of tax evasion for 2020, 2021 and 2022." The significant charge was lying to the DOJ, not the tax charges.
