Lawyers and their clients have differences of opinions all the time. Based on the statement of one of them they are going to outline why.....I'm betting that there is internal bickering on how the case is being handled and it blew up.

I think you are reading too much into it.

...Gates probably paid a sizable retainer upfront, but was surprised at how quickly the law firm burned through it.  He got billed again but either didn't want to pay more or didn't have the geetus.

When an attorney's client perjures him/herself, or does something illegal, it could implicate the attorney as well, if the attorney "knowingly" participated in this act.  In this case, it is quite common for an attorney to bail.  Of course there IS something called client/attorney privilege, but attorneys are actually also officers of the court and can be disbarred for knowingly engaging in illegal activities.

Just to be safe, his attorneys could have chosen to protect their licenses/legal standing.

...hire the attorneys until after allegedly committing the crimes with which he was charged, so they could not have participated in his acts.

Also, Gates was charged with conspiracy against the U.S, money laundering, being an unregistered foreign agent and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.  None of the counts involve perjury, so his attorneys could not be charged with subornation of perjury.
