This summer, as I have in the past, I have put together a reading list for my family. This year, as in years past, I have chosen works to make us better, to make us think and to help us take stock in where we are. The theme of this summer’s reading is the recent struggle to create a free society. One where all can live their lives in the fresh air of freedom without fear of any task master, except their own ambition and courage.
In reading these words, and looking at the political aspires for the Presidency, I am struck with the courage of these words. I am humbled by the lack of hatred so pervasive in our political speak of today. But most of all, I am struck by the utter lack of bitterness from those who could have, but did not due to the paralysis of fear. Roosevelt stated it best…. And his words are below.
For those who wonder why I would include Churchill? The answer is simple, he was truly working to wake the American Giant up- to fight for the cause of liberty…. And his mum was American.
We now live in a country that is afraid to define itself, to defend itself but saddest of all, to believe in itself. Return with me now, to those days of yesteryear…. Not so long ago, when we were full of hope, faith and belief….

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" I would say that if you notice... our leaders in the past were not apologetic in their pleas to God... not this god, or that god, but god.
I would say that they never promised that things would be free, easy or handed to anyone. In fact, they often spoke of struggle, toil and sacrifice.
I would also notice, that in every instance, they asked that their generation leave the place a bit better than they entered...

i disagree -- we are on a pretty good path. the economy is improving, the market is jumping, we are creating jobs, people want to come to live here, we are reaping huge benefits from globalization, Sure, we are stuck with Mr Bush for two more years. However, he faces a congress what won't let him do anything. Congress can't screw things up because they won't play with mr bush. -- viva la stalemate! everybody is trying to figure out how to make $$$ from global warming.
Sure we are in a tragic war. remember however that the loss of lives from the war is less than one month of traffic fatilities in the US.
get a smile on your face. read something funny with your family. maybe you can share a romantic book with the wife or SO and have a great time. plan a renunion or a cookout with friends. play croquet.

Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph. Perhaps, as I suspect, these invocations of God and His blessings were totally insincere -- merely a tired old rhetorical device which meant nothing to their authors or even to the audiences for their words but were nonetheless expected.
Perhaps it's that simple? I would think it an advance that we're no longer willing to be fololed by others, or by ourselves, in that respect.
