Kerry Deferment info

Sorry for the delay in providing this info/rebuttal. I am a republican who has to work, to help pick up the check for those sitting around waiting for a goverment check.
I had stated in a previous thread that Kerry had applied for a deferment before enlisting, and after being denied his application to further his studies in France, he then enlisted.
Without knowing his draft number its impossible to know if he enlisted out of a sense of duty, or just because he wanted to choose which branch of service he would serve in instead of waiting for a draft notice.
Hope this provides some info for those who are still undecided.

He plainly always thought the Vietnam war was a mistake.  But as his efforts to avoid the war failed, he did fight well once he had to.  Nevertheless, got himself transfered out of there as soon as he could, and honorably.

As a Kerry supporter, I wouldn't call him a "war hero," but he served bravely and honorably, nonetheless.

His record does contrast well to Bush's.

don't you know you are helping those who are sitting around waiting for a government check by not supporting Republicans?  Shame on you!

I agree with you Zin.  I graduated with a ROTC commission in June of 1966, was accepted at law school but needed a 3 year deferment, which was not granted.  They need young warm bodies and I was overseas by April of 67.  Never did go back to law school but did get an honorable discharge and served well, I believe.  So, even though I dislike Kerry more than cold boiled mutton I do respect his military service.  I'm still voting for Bush because I feel he's kept the country safe.  By the way I don't respect Bush's military service record but this is today not 35 some years ago and Bush is the man on the spot and he's kept the Country safe since 9/11.  My .02

Well, living close to NYC and having 4 children and 3 grandchildren in the area, I haven't noticed any reason for concern.  What are yours?  I hope your not sitting in Iowa shitting your pants about the next attack and telling the folks in NYC that Bush has done a bad job.  Wake-up and smell the coffee.

Who in NYC or Washington DC left home on 9/11/2001 thinking that a tremendous tragedy would take place that day?  You seem to be so sure about something that you, nor the poster that you responded to, nor I have any clue about.  Terrorists do not go around with signs on their back stating that they plan to cause mayhem.  Also, recent information have highlighted our inability to keep up with intelligence information that is coming in form some area where terrorists that are most likely to attempt to strike up either have safe haven or large followings.
The debate about whether we are safer now is an open ended one.  In the end, your answer, the previous poster's answer and my answe probaly boils down to what each of our general political position is.

Is this sposed to make us agin him?  Better to try to get out of it and when refused take part aggressively, than to take your NG posting so un-seriously that you are obviously  a shirker.

Kerry is not a hero-  but a guy who did what was asked.  Bush a slimy shirker. Then as now.

Can we get back to real issues now?

Upstater - I hope you're writing to us from Iraq, since you feel qualified to comment on Kerry's war record. Seen much combat?

Oh...what's that? You need to work to support all those lazy bums on the federal dole? You mean, of course, the Halliburton and Bechtel executives who are making out like pigs at the trough, which is filled with our tax dollars. I see your point...enough is never enough for those greedy bastards!

BTW, Not only did Kerry volunteer for service in Vietnam (unlike the President who marked "No" on the form for overseas duty), Kerry volunteered for swift boat duty, commonly known as the most hazardous duty for a Naval officer at the time. Care to make a snide remark about that?
