Let's face it, it's tough to beat an incumbant. An incumbant President has to really fuck up to get booted.

Consider the following:

There have been 28 Presidential elections since 1900. Only 5 of those elections an incumbant lost. To put this into perspective, 4 Presidents died in office since 1900.

Since 1900, the only ones to lose were

1)H.W. Bush (because of a recession)
2)Carter (because of hostages)
3)Ford (pardoned Nixon, and was never elected anyway)
4) Hoover (because of the Great Depression)
5) Taft (in a 4 way race)

Incumbants almost never lose. They have to fuck up pretty bad to not get re-elected. And whether you like it or not, Obama has not fucked up royally.

I have a prediction. The next Democrat who lives in the White House, will be an even worse President, regardless of what he or she does, in FFP's mind.

The fact of the matter is that while I'm certainly not happy with Obama, his administration has been remarkably scandal free. They made a bad call on Solyndra and on Fast & Furious, but these weren't all that bad.

Fast & Furious was the same method to find leaders of the Mexican drug cartels that are reaking havoc on our border that Valerie Plame was using to track down nukes and keep them away from terrorists. Solyndra was just a bad call made in a recession. Lots of that going around these days all over the country.

Does it stack up to outting a CIA agent to launch an illegal war? Does it stack up to what Randy Duke Cunningham, William Jefferson, Jim Traficant, Jack Abramoff did? Or conspiring with Iranians to not release hostages? Or giving them arms to do so? Is it as bad as Watergate? The XYZ Affair?

Saying no to the pipeline was the right call. The economy has improved, not gotten worse. S&P admitted that it was the GOP that caused the downgrade, and everyone knows it.

Not to mention that Obama's foreign policy has been the best the US has had in decades. He got bin Laden, helped take out Gaddafi, and over saw two more dictatorships fall in the Middle East, all while not getting a single US soldier killed, and at a tiny fraction of the price of the Iraq War.

Obama isn't the greatest President in US history, but I'd say the best of my lifetime. He ain't no Truman or FDR, but he's sure as fuck a lot better than Dubya, Reagan, Nixon and Hoover. I'd mention Harding, Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant as other lousy presidents, but I doubt FFP has ever heard of them.

Michelle Obama is the hottest first lady in US history by a mile. And I'm not really into the sistas.

Government and economists had more experience than you think. Many had living memories of the Long Depression that ended in 1896. Everyone understood what happened during the Robber Barron era, and the 20's was a repeat of that. They didn't understand the nature of individualized credit, but it shouldn't have been hard to figure out.

A lot of what FDR did was declared unconstitutional, but the court at the time was pretty right wing.

Worse still, Hoover broke the promise to give WW1 vets any compensation for their service, and when Hoovervilles were established, he sent the national guard on them.

Hoover deserves all the criticism he gets. Harding and Coolidge contributed to the problem too, and don't get enough criticism.

A new president will take office and the United States of America will once again have a real leader who knows how and will to take this nation forward.

He makes the list solely on his performance during the "Great Depression". But the Nation was facing its first big depression in the modern industrial age. Government and economist had very little or no experience dealing with the problem.

They didn't really know until after the depression the extent of the downturn. They had no way to adequately monitor fiscal or monetary policy. Most of this was done by local bankers.

It was a worldwide depression  and it is still unclear if Hover could have done much about it. Much of what FDR did and tried to do was ruled unconstitutional.

Most of what the "know it all's" say should have been done to limit the Great Depression is measured by today's standards. What the Government can legally do today.  Not what was legal at the time.

There was a downturn in Dec. 1895 thru June of 1897 which is called the "Panic of 1896". NOT a Depression. The Panic is described as follows:

"The Panic of 1896 was an acute economic depression in the United States that was less serious than other panics of the era precipitated by a drop in silver reserves and market concerns on the effects it would have on the gold standard Deflation of the commodities prices drove the stock market to new lows in a trend that began to reverse only after the1896 election of McKinley."

A year and half down turn is hardly a "long depression".

For the record there is:

Panic of 1873 and Long Depression Ended in 1879.
Depression of 1920 -1921
Great Depression 1929 - 1933

Remember this is 1929 (Great Depression). The government data on the economy was 3 to 4 months old by the time it was compiled. Many homes and places in the US didn't have phones. Business was not required to report activity. Banks were hardly regulated, the Federal Reserve was established in 1913 but was very weak.

The US was on the Gold Standard.  On April 25, 1933 the United States and Canada dropped the gold standard. It's what finally allowed the US to inflate the money and work its way out of the Depression.
