Donald Trump's proposal to build a wall along the Mexican border suffers from three major problems:  
(1) it will be hugely expensive.
(2) it will be difficult-to-near impossible, logistically.
(3) it is unlikely to have much actual impact on undocumented immigrants.  

Several GOP members in Congress are growing increasingly vocal in signaling their lack of enthusiasm for the project. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), for example, said that "If you're going to spend that kind of money, you're going to have to show me where you're going to get that money." John Cornyn (R-TX), the second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, declared that, "I don't think we're just going to be able to solve border security with a physical barrier because people can come under, around it and through it." Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is turning into a real thorn in Trump's rump, was even more direct: "It's not a viable option." And while these individuals are expressing their concerns in terms of cost and practicality, which work well for public consumption, there are two additional problems that they are not going to publicize so much. The first is that many GOP money donors do not want their land taken via eminent domain, and are making their feelings known to their senators and representatives. The second is that the businesses that send lots of money to GOP coffers depend on a steady supply of cheap labor, and would not be pleased to see that pipeline threatened.

Since the wall was such a central part of Donald Trump's campaign will he let it go without a fight? At this point, the odds for building a border wall are not looking good.

There are many ideas in the works being  discussed though not with the press until President Trump gives his approval. We owe the press nothing except thanks for motivating our voters.

1.  "America First" President Trump administration will enforce immigration  laws already on the books

2. Expand  the drone fleet monitoring our borders.

3. Drastically cut Federal funding to Sanctuary cities.

4. Negotiate with Mexico to build the wall on their land.

5. Study the feasibility of building the wall following Amazon's model, without depending on a brick and mortar façade.

6. Dramatically Increase penalties  for identity theft.

7. Dramatically Increase penalties for employers hiring illegals to save money.

8. Expand and remodel Guantanamo to house deported criminals who illegally return, possibly housing up to 100,000 illegals on a self sufficient minimum security work farm.
   If they escape, let Cuba take care of them.

 There are many other options on the table.

The Rio Grande is already there. He could fill it with alligators and call that his dramatic gesture, but there's something obviously foolish. And the Wall isn't going to be much more effective.

There are Border Agents in Texas who have offered some ideas that might work--drones, electronic surveillance, alarms that could direct agents to where crossings are in progress--but these suggestions lack the big razzle-dazzle of a WALL.

He made up a lot of shit during the campaign to discredit Obama. Not enough vetting for refugees. But there's 18-24 months intensive and very effective vetting by virtually every branch of National Security. Makes no never-mind, ain't enough. He's going to do extreme vetting. Maybe 3-4 years. Who knows? If he can throw our money at it run people around and make all the immigrants mad at him, maybe kill a few kids, a big splash...

Oh, year, and of course ObamaCare is horrible, horrible, horrible. Now he's got to come up with something better for his Insurance Companies friends, but some keep the parts of the ACA that his so-called constituents don't want to lose. He doesn't understand that it's a conceptual system he's trying to invent and not a conglomeration of parts. He's not used to that kind of "building."

Of course the Wall is the kind of building he IS good at, and he can really freak at that...but...how can he make the Wall prevent MORE immigration and allow for MORE departments than what has already been reduced during the Obama situation? He can't, of course, but he CAN make a gesture and slap his name on whatever he constructs. But again, the concept of slowing undocumented crossings is still pretty foggy to him.

This so-called "president" is really a pretty useless tool for whatever work this country has to get done.

2. I will build the wall and Mexico will pay for it
3. I will ban Muslims from coming to the country
4. My tax returns are being audited
5. I will release my tax returns as soon as audit is completed

as for your points.

1-They all have enforced the laws.  But with poverty on one side, and jobs for all who cross on the other, people will find a way across no mater what.

2-this plus a wall is expensive.  I doubt Congress will appropriate enough to do this correctly.

4-Not happening.

5-Sounds like a high tech boondogle.

6-They almost never catch people that commit this crime, so increase penalties would do very little.

7-This would work, but you will see push back from business owners.  

8-I don't think GiTMO could hold 100,000 prisoners.  (limited water supply, plus all supplies must be brought in from the mainland).

The wall is just Trump and the Republican's playing on the fears of some American's who want protectionism. They know if they come through on their promise to build the wall, they will be just like the little Dutch Boy. The wall won't hold for long, and they really don't want to have to pay for it. I suspect it will not be built, but there will be some high-tech improvements on border security.

How many dykes really want a Little Dutch Boys finder inside of them? A little Dutch Girl, maybe, but most certainly not the finger of a little boy. lol

But to be serious for just a moment. I actually hope you are right. Yes, the border does need to become more secure, but I can't imagine a wall accomplishing that goal. I agree that a wall is only a symbolic statement and a very expensive one at that.

That said, even if we do blow a few billion building a pointless wall, it still pales in comparison for what Hillary had in store for us. I don't have to agree with Trump on EVERYTHING to be very grateful that he is POTUS and not HRC

IDK whether a "wall" is the best strategy or not. What I do know is that Trump doesn't twist himself into a pretzel and sweat what word best describes the "barrier" he wants on the southern border as Clinton does.  

That vacillation and Washington establishment style of speaking Clinton is known for is just one of several reason she lost the election.

Good morning Jack! Just to start out the week on a positive note, the laughing emoticon is not laughing at you, but rather my clever and funny subject line!

Well, perhaps not all that clever or funny, however it put a smile on my face this rainy and dreary Monday morning.

But, yes I believe both sides play both sides on this issue, because it's a touchy subject, and people on both sides have mixed agendas. I know plenty of well-off Republicans hiring Central and South Americans to do work in their homes and businesses. They voted for Trump, but not because of his promise to built the wall.
