As for the "dishing it out", I'm all for it as long as it can be quick, and produce a lasting result... But I suspose a fearless foot-soldier like yourself would prefer hand-to-hand combat with every terrorist-muslim in Bagdad... To which I say PLEASE go and do that! Whether you susceeded or failed it would still produce a result I'd be happy with...

I'm not saying that Lohan and Beckham are viable news judgments but why would a local LA station be covering a story in Minnesota?  It should be left for the network news to cover unless there is a legitimate LA angle to the story.

Drive down to Long Beach and look at the Terminal Island Bridges, for yourself. Specifically I urge you to look at the Gerald Desmond Bridge between Long Beach and Terminal Island, perhaps the most rickety bridge in the state. They have been doing patchwork repairs for years, but the ARCH Design of the bridge was simply not designed to withstand the frequent and heavy use by 80,000 pound semi-trailers.

Don't you think it would be useful for you as a taxpayer to understand some of the infrastructure dilemnas we are facing so that we can respond rationally to options. Perhaps the focus of our Democratic Senators and Congressman would be better spent addressing these issues than this whole bullshit about Alberto Gonzalez.

Ah whats the use, go back to your Entertainment Tonight show.

Why has democracy been a comparative success in Turkey?

They are Muslim. They have a long and storied past not dissimilar to the rest of the Middle East to their immediate south.

I don't think the Brits ever strolled through Turkey and drew arbitrary lines on the ground with their giant sized piece of sidewalk chalk. Could that be part of it?

(1) Turkey ain't Iraq.  Every country is different.

(2) Turkey's secularization came from within.  It wasn't imposed from outside.  And that's true of most lasting changes.

If we really to change Iraq, we'd have taken a lesson from the Soviets.  Forget sending the Marines - send McDonald's.

Iraq was most recently the leftover of the Ottoman Empire.  The core of course became Turkey.  The outlying provinces in the Arabian peninsula stayed mostly in the 17th century.

Probably had more to do with social and economic patterns.  But it does cast doubt on any neocon PNAC  bull-in-china-shop theories.
