CDL,

See, I told you my favorite thing about this business was learning. LOL. 🤣 You just taught me something!

I see why so many say you're a "keeper" in real life!

I half-listen to my husband MOST of the time. But he does have an amazing financial brain. But I fear that he might have a new addiction. More so than the hos!!!! (And yes, like Nick, he CAN still get hard and cum "eye roll").

Anyhow, he does this 15-minute betting on stocks and commodities and then watches it all day. BUT, there are some bets like on keywords that Trump will say in his speech tonight. Or week-long bets to see the price of things etc.

1.) I didn't even know that Trump was giving a speech tonight. Can't wait to see it.
2.) I was HIGHLY upset that I could only bet on one option! My husband said, "It'd be like betting against yourself". But "Hormuz" or "Peace"? Really?!?!?!

Is this what retirees do all day now? I see golf clubs are closing down. I refuse to make an account. Using his, I placed a $1 that the S&P would hit a number at the end of 15 minutes. I profited $1.74. But what was most important was what I learned about myself. There aren't enough benzos in the world for me to take up this sport. Gambling really is the only vice that I've never had, and it's still true today.

-K

That's been my vice since I was 18 years old.  They open the betting windows, then 30-35 minutes later, the race is over and you collect your winnings.  A typical day's fun is 8-10 races, depending on the track.   My local track, Santa Anita, opened Dec. 26th and has a full card Fridays-Sundays through mid-June.

CDL,

It counts. And I  am not built for it. I've only gone a few times in my lifetime, and I've regretted them all!! I was either too hot or too cold. Also, I can't appreciate being an anxious wreck for the whole race! Plus, once I've lost $20-$50, then I'm done -- the house isn't getting more from me!

Anyone who spends a "day at the races" with you is a keeper!

-K

not like a casino where you are betting against the house.  The house takes 10-20% vigorish and you are betting against the other gamblers, not the house.  In other words, the odds are not fixed like they are in casino gambling, they are a product of the makeup of the betting pool from all of the gamblers.  When you win, you are winning the money from the other gamblers who did not pick the winning horse like you did.

Are you sure you want me to scratch you off of my "keeper" list.  Lol

You finally contributed something of value to one these threads.   I stand corrected, you are right on the spelling, but I'm guessing that's about the extent of your knowledge on horse racing until you look something else up.  Google is more YOUR friend than my friend.  Have a glass of champagne.  This is a major Gotcha! moment for you.  Lol

How about Jai Alai? It's also parimutuel wagering.

Hey Mr.Parity,

I don't know. I've never been to jai alai game... It gets points for seemingly being indoors. It loses those points for being listed as the "fastest sport in the world", risk of injury, and discrimination against southpaws...

How DOESN'T Foxwoods in Connecticut have this?! On the subject of Foxwoods, some of the nicest suites I've ever seen, and I loved bingo there. If there were to be a jai alai event there, I MIGHT go to the headlining games. Other than that, I'd be working in a room or playing bingo. My anxiety can take two bingo cards in one morning session! That's about the anxiety level, I can wager. This injury risk... is problematic. I'm glad they're wearing helmets, but they need full-body gear! Yikes!

Again, thank you for exposing me to something new!

Kisses,
Katie

in Vegas and Reno used to have Jai Alai.  It was much more prone to "fixing" than horse racing, so it only lasted about 5 years in the 1980's, but I loved it and would often fly over just to bet on Jai Alai.  (During that time Southwest had a weekday roundtrip fare of $39, with flights almost every hour).  They closed the Vegas location first, and Reno was the only place to go in the West for a few more years.

New York has both throughbred and harness (standardbred) racing. There are stories of jockeys / drivers helping to fix races for various reasons: "It's jockey Bob's birthday today. Let's let him win." But it can be risky to be too obvious about holding back a horse or otherwise influencing the outcome of a horse race; the horses don't always go along when the fix is in.
.
In Jai Alai, you can get the same game fixing influences: "It's Bob's birthday today. Let's let him win." However, it's probably much easier to rig the outcome. "Good shot! I just barely missed picking it up (on purpose)." or "Oh, darn. (wink wink). I was trying for a really close throw but it went out of bounds. Oh, well. Good game! Happy Birthday!"
.
Of course, there are less friendly and more criminal influences in horse racing and Jai Alai.

CT used to have three Jai Alai frontons along the highways (I-84 for sure and maybe i-95?) when driving from Boston to New York. They are no longer there.

We used to have harness racing in Socal at Hollywood Park race track, but SoFi Stadium now stands on that spot where the Rams and Chargers play. The only place you can see Harness racing in CA now is the Cal Expo in Sacramento  (State Fair).

However, we still have quarter-horse racing at Los Alamitos RaceTrack, and a Summer Thoroughbred meet at Del Mar, CA. Santa Anita reopens during October for the Oak Tree Meet .

CDL and Mr. Parity,

Any sport or competition can be fixed, and it has a history of being fixed—even cheerleading! This is what I don't understand: you two come on here and claim to be fair. But you're going to allow this obvious discrimination against southpaws to go on unaddressed? I'm looking at you both differently!

Kisses,
Katie

"...  claim to be fair." ??? Where did I make any such claim? I did not!
.
But the unfairness is worse than you have discussed so far. Almost all horse races in the US are run counterclockwise even though there are horses that favor CW turns over CCW. (There might be a few US tracks that run clockwise races.) I think it goes back to the chariot races at the Circus Maximus in Rome which were run counterclockwise. (There is even video evidence! This version has been dubbed into English: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LVp4tvl5O4 )
.
When you open your own jai alai fronton, you can have some contests played L-to-R, favoring righties, and some played R-to-L for lefties.
| rear wall ___________ front wall | for righties
| front wall ___________ rear wall | for lefties
.
In professional / casino poker, the dealer dispenses the cards to the players CW, not CCW. Players are free to "fan" their cards L-over-R or R-over-L. The earth, however, always rotates W-to-E.
.
I am typing this message to be read L-to-R but some languages are meant to be read tfel-ot-thgir or even top to bottom in R-to-L columns or L-to-R columns.
.
There is inherent "unfairness" in The Ambidextrous Universe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ambidextrous_Universe
and it can be traced to the conservation of parity.

Mr. Parity,

You got the name, fair and square. But your attempts to get me to understand parity mathematically or physically will remain futile! I can stay at any Holiday Inn I want, but I'm not on Dr. Wu's level! Could the lesson here be that if one doesn't understand something, then it doesn't exist? It justifies cognitive dissonance to a degree... You're telling me that the world isn't fair. I hear you. But at the same time, I can't hear you. I might as well read Dr. Gardner from the bottom to the top, back to front. I will get the same amount out of it. Good for proofreading but not good for comprehension... We have an annual gingerbread house competition. All that I've learned is how to help my team by "fixing" sugar. 🤣AND you're hitting the sensitive spot in this whole discussion! A lot of people have told me that because of my understanding of southpaws, I should understand physics. Every time someone tells me this, it hurts. It hurts from a deep, deep place. 🤣🤣🤣

Also, I'd never "open" a jai alai fronton. Did you miss that whole bit about my anxiety? I'm dabbling in small business ownership right now, and I am learning it is not for the weak. I thought it'd be a lot simpler, because "isn't every provider a small-business owner"?  In actuality, it might be a lil' more difficult than I gave it credit. Operating a jai alai fronton just sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen! So scratch that idea, too.

Moreover, your suggestion is still a separation. Only lefties would be able to play with lefties. They'd be separate. Would they be equal? I imagine it being comparable to women's sports. So, it solves nothing. I think I will have to make my way to see Jai Alai. If nothing else, I'm curious now. Despite it's inherit discrimination, it's now been added to my bucket list.

Kisses,
Katie

"Moreover, your suggestion is still a separation. Only lefties would be able to play with lefties." No, no, no! The current rules do require that everyone wear the cesta on the right hand and play "righty."  Ls can play against Rs even "natural" Ls have to play R-handed anyway.
.
Switch ends (front - back) and the closed side wall now favors the Rs so the rules would require all players, natural Rs and Ls, must wear the cesta on their L hand and still compete against each other.
.
Even better, think squash or handball played on a four-walled court. It is symmetrical, "closed" on both L and R sides. It is fair for both Ls and Rs. Spectators view from above or from behind glass partitions. ("Glass" means hard transparent material: glass, plastic, etc..) Likewise, think tennis with NO side walls. Put glass walls on the sides of a tennis court (and adjust the rules to allow or disallow caroms off the side wall glass) and it's symmetrically fair for Ls and Rs. Each player can choose to wear the cesta on their L or R hand.
.
Now, replace the "net" on the audience side of the cancha (court floor) with a glass wall and move it in to be the in-play side wall. Other than transparency, the court is now symmetrical and fair, like a squash court, to Ls and Rs.
.
Or to further increase fairness and audience intimacy, make BOTH side walls out of glass and put spectator seating on both sides. Fair for the audience and fair for the competing Ls and Rs. (Now, it's like an ice hockey rink with plexi-glass sidewalls (above the boards, that is).)

EDIT: Oops. I meant to include some jai alai links. I think this should be a list of five:

Mr. Parity,

I'm gonna call you out on what I feel that you just did. You're using reverse psychology on me as an advisor/mentor. And it worked... You listed all these possible modifications that we could make. Then, oh by the way, you slid in a brief video with the history of the game. Low blow!

Now, there's no way that we can modify the game. The mission must be to restore it to its original glory. The sinister will have to continue wearing the cesta on their right. They should be used to making modifications.

Wow. I thought my opinion of you had changed because of the blatant discrimination. Then you played dirty politics against me! Who the hell are you? Have you been hacked? I don't even know how to close this message! Not kisses but not deuces. Saying "your ex-friend" is overkill..

Hasta luego,
-K

Point of correction. Trump did a scheduled "interview" today, not a "speech."
