There is every sign of Obstruction of Justice here.  At the end, Bush and Chainy both might not be around to pardon any of them.

This is so easy.  Congress under Clinton spent 140 hours investigating his Christmas Card list.  This Congress only needs to turn over a rock, and there are a lot of rocks.

But George W. has been an unmitigated disaster, recognized now by the majority of Americans. The sooner that we can pull his remaining teeth, so that he cannot expand his adventures to more preemptive strikes on countries such as Iran, the better.

Impeachment of Alberto "Abu Ghraib" Gonzales will be a good first step to returning the Constitution as the "Law of the Land", instead of a mere inconvenience to King W.

as 2 properly pointed out, watergate began as a "3rd rate buglary". Clinton camer under investigation as the result of taxpayers being defrauded AND his mysogeny and reckless behavior made him vunerable.

Now, Gonzalez may well be introuble becasue rather than just properly asserting  that GWB has the peragotive to fire these judges, end of story, someone got longwinded, trusted Chucky Schumer (what a mistake that was) and now we have conflicting stories.

All of which may lead to actually something real, which is obstruction of justice  vis a vie Lam/Lewis...

I was thinking about this last night. I think what we've gotten over the last 14 years is a pretty slick operator and fair public pol working his way thru exceptionally easy times, post cold war, peace dividend, etc. And for the last 6 we've had someone I'd agree is at least somewhat incompetent dealing with EXTREMELY difficult times. dot-com crash and it's budget impacts, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, and of course Bushes critics tend to be of the hyperbolic bitchninnie variety...

Remember, it wasn't the 5th for Susan McDougal.  She refused to say anything about Clinton or help in Ken Starr's investigation in any way.  Starr wouldn't have been able to put her in jail if it were that she took the 5th.  

(Just in case you think I'm giving Clinton too much credit-- Josef Stalin gained his power by being both cruel and charming.  Hard to believe, but that's what his biographers say.)

Bush can't get through life on his good looks, personality or intelligence.  People aren't going to sit in jail for him.

There's an interesting question here.  Just what crime is it she's worried about?

Her attorney's letter claims that she's taking the 5th because of partisanship.  But you can't take the 5th just because the people asking you questions are "being mean".  Nor can you take the 5th if your truthful answers will be unflattering.

She hasn't testified before Congress or under oath yet, so it can't be perjury.

I'm not a lawyer, but there's only two ways I know of that she could commit a crime from the information we currently have.

#1 would be obstruction of justice, if she was interfering with an investigation.  But it's VERY unlikely that the DoJ->White House liaison would do anything that could be construed as obstruction of justice.  I'd expect such a charge to be filed against those she was liaising between who actually made decisions that obstructed justice.

#2: It is illegal to cause someone else to lie to Congress.  There's some rumors going around that she gave false information to DoJ folks who did testify before Congress, and let's just say those staffers are not amused.  This would seem to be the most likely crime she'd be worried about.  Of course, that now gets into the area of "just what were you covering up when you had these other people lie?".

We'll just have to see how this part develops.

Cursed always to re-live the trauma of the Clinton administration.  

And to think, Clinton was not liberal, evil, nor even a significant a figure.  I said before, he was a warm body.  Or, if you like the metaphor better-- a ham sandwich for POTUS to keep the Republicans out of the White House.  

I'd like for you to give me a score card of those 5th Amendments.  I'm certain somebody took the 5th as Republican committees spent 140 hours investigating Clinton's Christmas Card list (see link).  I'm certain a few people took the 5th then.  

Or how about Sox-Gate, where Republicans investigated whether taxpayers were footing the bill for stationery used for the Clinton's cat's fan club?  See this link:

Considering the detailed lengths Republicans went against the guy, I have to conclude that either Republicans were incompetent, and/or Clinton was the most squeaky clean POTUS since Herbert Hoover.  

The former is now well-demonstrated, and therefore, putting Clinton's warm horny carcass into the White House was justified.  

And ever since Clinton, Republicans are not just incompetent, but insane.

No, the first 8 months of Clinton's term was far worse in terms of the immediate backlash marshaled against him.  And Clinton started out with an approval of only 42 percent and worked up. While Bush got handed an approval of 90 percent or so, and brought it down.  Clinton also didn't take 12 weeks of vacation or so in his first 10 months.   Bush certainly made his first term look easy.  Not in a good way, either.    

Maybe the nation had a stressful time in the first term of Bush, but Bush didn't.  It's part of the reason why his approval ratings stink.
