Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(Adopted by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 217A (III)
of December 10, 1948)
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and
inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the
foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in
barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and
the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom
of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been
proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have
recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and
oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of
law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly
relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter
reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the
dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of
men and women and have determined to promote social progress and
better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in
cooperation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal
respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental
freedoms,
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of
the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
Now, therefore,
The General Assembly
Proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common
standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the
end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping
this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and
education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by
progressive measures, national and international, to secure their
universal and effective recognition and observance, both among
the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of
territories under their jurisdiction.

Unfortunately it is very true...
Too bad the UN isn't doing what it was mandated to do, and has instead become a platform for Pan-Arab anti-Semitism, Pan-African impoverishment, and an excuse for brutal thugs like Arafat and Ahmadinejad to come to AMERICA and be treated like heroes when what they deserve is nothing less than a Firing Squad, nothing more than an unmarked grave in a landfill off the Haitian coastline.
to lead this rag-tag band of cut-throats snd thieves. They go to the UN to thump their chests and act like "Big Boys" while at home their peoples live in poverty and oppression.... and they all point at tiny infractions in the US which we, in idiot savant, fashion try to fix.
A suggestion - the UN HQ should "move around"! it should be placed in "The most hostile and dangerous places in the world" Right now? Baghdad. or perhaps Terhan. If indeed it is to provide for humanity - let it live among the worst off of us. There is the problem - not the East Side of Manhattan. In that manner - the press of the world would be forced to look at and reflect the reality of the brutality that the UN does absolutely nothing about... their goals should be:
1) Education for all.
2) Human rights - freedoms that should be universal - tollerance of others, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of economic pursuits.
3) Human opportunity. That is, an elimination of "Caste Systems" designed to prevent social and economic movement based upon accidents of birth...
so UN - wanna really do something... there you have it.
who pointed out that the WHO does a pretty good job?
that are pretty good.... it is the larger organization that is IMHO a failure. Please feel free to totally disagree.

1st, if you expect it to perform as advertised, NO govt agency, NO CHURCH, and many businesses can't do that.
If you're happy with it allowing us to keep our eyes on a few flakes, and provide a lightning rod now and again, it's just fine.
I used to be real smug about 3rd world incompetence and corruption. Dubya's GOP has shut me up about that. I will still grant that we are more sophisticated, and less obvious about it.
2nd, these backing-n-filling operations are necessary to provide a vent. I'd much rather have Chavez ranting in NYC than having us spend the money to communicate via ordnance.
Remember this: rants are cheap and readily forgotten, ordnance is expensive and makes rally lasting messes.
First of all, it would keep all but the bravest diplomats out of the UN.
Second, it would compel the UN to raise a serious and respectable force armed force.
Though it will probably be construed as imperialism, it would be the best thing to get failed states back on their feet.
It has another drawback. How would the HQ be supplied?
if there was the demand and support for a more effective UN, it'd already be there.
The LAST thing we or anybody else wants or will tolerate is another serious and respectable armed force under control of an unpredictable command.
The logistics alone involved in moving the UN HQ around would kill it.
You guys aren't getting it: the UN already is what the international community will support, and the USA is far and away the most powerful player.
Complaining that it's not something more is like whining that jesus doesn't answer your prayers.
The UN is not as advertised. and just because everthing else is screwed up, that does not mean that we cannot demand better. After all, we demand better of our own government- does not mean we will get that either.
As far as the UN goes.... sometimes Dinosaurs either evolve into birds or die.

You get better all the time, Bizarro.
Oops, wrong thread.
it's wrong to think that everything is going to be all things to anybody - let alone everybody.
The UN is what it is, a place to posture & vent and maybe network, or let us occupy and keep an eye on a few thousand 3rd worlders who would otherwise be up to no good in their home countries.
If it doesn't meet its expectations, your expectations, or the expectations of anybody at all, that's like one hell of a lot of people and agencies.
WE started it. It's in OUR country. If you don't think the US intel agencies are all through it, you're nuts. It's important to realize that the rest of the world regards it as a western puppet, and for good reason.
If it doesn't do what it advertises, shit, our own govt doesn't do what it advertises.
What we have to worry about is a govt that does not take the hint when its frontline cops say, hey, there's a bunch of people taking flying lessons here who aren't concerned about learning how to land....
Just saying!
We wake up in the morning with the government we have, not the government we want.
I don't wake up well these days... the government we have, gives me nightmares.
It's true, the US govt is one hell of a lot more immediate problem than the UN.
But it only gets worse!! martin doesn't know what vinyl is (see above), and you probably can't ride in this godawful air, and might even have to evacuate.
The 2nd coming is at hand. I wish.
